1908 Football National Champions?
Has anyone ever heard of this and why would we not claim this?
quote:

Edgar R. Wingard is a former college football head coach. He coached six different teams from 1904 to 1925, including the University of Pittsburgh and Louisiana State University. His career record is 70-33-6. He also served as the head coach of the LSU Tigers baseball team from 1908-1909 and as first basketball coach in the history of LSU Tigers basketball in 1909.

quote:

In 1908 he led LSU to a 10-0-0 record. The Tigers were awarded the national championship by the National Championship Foundation, although the school does not officially claim that season as a national championship season.

I never went to reading school.

So you think that the paragraph you bolded was written about the baseball team? That would be one hell of a coincidence.

Oh wow, you are serious about the baseball thing? You do realize they are saying LSU football went 10-0 in 1908 and was awarded the MNC and not LSU baseball....right?

It never mentions football, so I have this crazy feeling the baseball team went 10-0.

I really don't think we should claim a championship where we only won 10 games...unless other schools have done it. I know Texas claims conference titles as far back as then.

Yeah, and they were named #1 by the same foundation.

I was saying if it was true, I probably wouldn't claim it.

re: 1908 Football National Champions?
I was a student in 1958 (& '59, & '60) when LSU won the national football championship. The most respected title was that awarded by the Associated Press, nwspaper writers. The United Press International (U.P.I.) also voted LSU as national champions. Split titles then happened if the two self appointed title givers disagreed. The U.P.I. voters may have been coaches, I don't know.
When the title was awarded there was plenty of talk about how LSU won the title 50 years apart. If you have access to archives from The Morning Advocate and the State Times in Baton Rouge or the Times Picyunne (sp?) this could be documented. My Dad, who graduated from LSU 1925
would in fun suggest that LSU was due to win the title again in 2008.
Before the B.C.S. the title was voted on by writers. And, if the group voting the title to LSUin 1908 was the largest representative of newspaper writers voting - I think it is a legitimate title. I understand it is ancient history, but I believe we should honor those who came before us if it is legitimate.
This is not the B.S. that Ole Miss and Alabama claim in titles that were bestowed by a single newspaper writer in Memphis or Atlanta.
