NFL: Brooks Fined $16,000 For Drew Brees Hit?

49ers LB Ahmad Brooks' hit on Saints QB Drew Brees last Sunday has been the topic of discussion all week. The play was called a penalty, but many players and analysts have defended the hit saying it was clean. Well, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Brooks has been fined $16,000 by the NFL. What do you think? Here's the hit, once again...

Here's the rule, none of the talking heads are mentioning.

HITS TO PASSER’S HEAD AND USE OF HELMET AND FACEMASK
(3) In covering the passer position, Referees will be particularly alert to fouls in which defenders impermissibly use the helmet and/or facemask to hit the passer, or use hands, arms, or other parts of the body to hit the passer forcibly in the head or neck area (see also the other unnecessary-roughness rules covering these subjects).

That's what was called in accord with the above rule. If teams/owners don't like the rule, change it. The refs did their job!!

The shoulder is NOT the neck area . It was a terrible call . But who cares . I don't have to pay a fine . If you touch a QB you get a penalty , they need to put flags on the QB's waist . It's ruining the game .

It looks clear to me that Brook's bicep hits Drew right in the neck.

The real question now is, is Drew 6'2 after that hit. He's literally inching up to the prototypical QB

What that doesnt not show is how the arm rode up the QB's neck and head area as he took him to the turf. Right Call. No question. Carry on.

"The refs did their job!!"

Sure. They just did it poorly. It was clearly a hit to the shoulders. To say otherwise is foolish. The .gif is clear. Not that I care much, but the refs got it wrong and the fact that the NFL is fining Ahmad Brooks just goes to show why the NFL is terrible and getting worse. I can't remember the last NFL game I watched.

Brooks upper arm and shoulder clearly hit Brees neck. According to the new rules, you cannot make contact with a QB head or neck area. The rule may not be liked but the call was correct and spot on according to the rules. NFL almost lost one the greatest in Payton Manning to a neck injury.
