When South Carolina opens preseason football practice Friday night, they will be outfitted in Guardian Caps. The padded shells, made of polyurethane fabric, are designed to fit over helmets and reduce impacts to the head.

There’s controversy whether the caps violate helmet certification standards. But South Carolina tried them on linemen in the spring, liked them and is going with them team-wide for practice, said athletic trainer Clint Haggard.

“I’ve talked to our team physicians and discussed all that stuff, and I’ve talked to a bunch of people around the country,” said Haggard. “And we’re still going to use them. … It seems like it will help.”

Spurrier took a new posture about four or five years ago whereas he is all about keeping them healthy during the summer and then cutting them loose to wreak havoc come September. Seems to be working as his preseason injuries have been reduced by a ton. More importantly, it's probably psychological - the players probably really appreciate it - like the NBC cares about them. Builds loyalty. The HBS is always willing to modernize his way of thinking.

Cuts down on the chance of concussion. Not so sure it's gonna do much for heat related issues during practice though. Looks like it'll impede the airflow through the helmet. So, how would you like your brains today? Scrambled or fried?
