LSU Hoops: Coaching Preview

LSU has accumulated an impressive group of coaches for the 2014-2015 season, and it all starts with head man Johnny Jones. Coach Jones of DeRidder, Louisiana graduated from LSU in 1985. This year will be his 20th as a Tiger. Four years as a player, thirteen as an assistant coach under Dale Brown, and three as head coach. He is the only person in LSU history to play and coach a final four team.

In his first two seasons at LSU he has won 39 games, which is the most ever by a coach in their first two years. Jones led LSU to the second round of the NIT tournament last year giving him his sixth 20+ win season in his last eight years as a head coach (Five with North Texas).

After two seasons on the staff under Coach Jones, David Patrick was promoted to Assistant Head Coach for this season. Prior to his stint with LSU, he was a personnel scout with the Houston Rockets. He also has 5 years’ experience as an assistant at Saint Mary’s and Nicholls State. He is best known for his ability to find and recruit international players, especially Australians. He was born in Bermuda but grew up in Australia.

LSU added an impressive resume to the staff this season, bringing in former NBA Head Coach Eric Musselman as an associate coach. He was the youngest head coach in CBA history at 23 and was named head coach of Golden State in 2002. He earned runnerup for NBA Coach of the Year in the 02-03 season. He later coached the Sacramento Kings. He is known for his up-tempo offensive philosophies and has been dubbed by many as LSU’s “X’s and O’s Coach”. Coach Jones has already spoken of the intensity he brings to practice and his ability to get the most effort out of his players.

Coach Jones has a long history with Assistant Coach Charlie Leonard who he brought with him from North Texas. This will be Coach Leonard’s 15th season coaching with Jones. Leonard also has head coaching experience at Christian Brothers University (1990-1997).

Another staff member with head coaching experience is Tom Kelsey, Director of Basketball Operations. Kelsey has had many stops including head coach at Faulkner University and assistant coaching at Alabama.

Finally, LSU gets a boost in the staff from first time coach, Ronald Dupree. Dupree is a Student Assistant while he finishes his degree. It’s the same path Coach Jones took with his first coaching season being as an LSU student assistant. Dupree played under Coach John Brady from 99-03 and went to the Sweet 16 as a freshman. He led the SEC in scoring in 02 and 03 before an 11 year professional career (6 in the NBA). The 33 year old brings a lot of playing experience and knowledge of the game.
Tomorrow we will delve into the projected starting lineup and possible rotation of players these coaches will throw out on the court this season. This early there is still a lot of questions to be answered, but that won’t stop the fans from discussing who we think should be getting the minutes.
