The "Jr." and "III" are out of respect for the father and grandfather. Certainly nothing wrong with putting it on the jersey.

Yes, I understand that's his legal name, but I've never understood it. Also never understood Robert Griffin "III". Is there another Robert Griffin QB on the Redskins' roster that we might confuse him with?

The ONLY time it's necessary to append Jr. after a name is when people with the same name (such as the Griffeys) play the same sport. Other than that, just say Odell Beckham and Robert Griffin. I think all of us are smart enough to figure it out.
