re: Golf Board: Pulling up in my golf swing
Posted by Tenforty1728 on 7/16 at 1:10 pm
One of the better tips i've seen for this off the tee is to put the logo on the ball on top. This gives your mind a focal point and you can't pick your head up and still have your eyes on the logo. Obviously doesn't do you any good out of the fairway playing the ball down, but maybe the repeti...

The fact that you don't have any kids or a house makes you more likely to owe, not less. I would have it taken out of the next few checks if you're not living way above your means needing every dollar. ...

Gulf Shores Golf
Posted by Tenforty1728 on 4/22 at 9:15 am
Headed to Gulf Shores for the Mullet Toss this weekend. I want to play golf but the only place I've played down there is Lost Key and I won't be playing there again for a while. It's no fun to shoot 95 on vacation. Looked at Kiva Dunes, Craft Farms, Peninsula, and Gulf Shores Country Club. Pri...

I would like to hear some figures on how much less they're spending trying to catch these RUTHLESS pot dealers and maybe catching some real criminals. I imagine if you combine the tax revenue with the savings of cops elsewhere (hoping its not out giving stupid traffic tickets) then you've got a syst...

Liking what you do is overrated. Very few people like the mundane activities most adults end up doing to make a living. It's an honest profession unlike some professions which would wear on an honest moral person. People trust you which can be rewarding as a career path. It's a nice living. ...

Don't be ridiculous homers. LSU's schedule is really difficult this year but it's ok for other teams to have hard schedules too. Cal's is tough. @ Oregon, @ Stanford and playing Northwestern (who will contend for the big 10 championship) and Ohio State as out of conference games. That sounds lik...

I would probably put 2 allowances on my W-4 and enjoy the small bit "extra" i'm keeping each paycheck while still making sure I don't owe at the end of the year. I'm a CPA, so granted I stay much closer on my taxes than your average joe, but I really like to spot check my withholding around Oct...

Don't overthink this. We're not talking about enough money to worry about not paying the note off and investing the cash. We're talking about saving roughly $350 a year in interest by paying the thing off. Just consider that savings and enjoy not having a car note anymore and continue to be a res...

re: New Job- Dependent Question
Posted by Tenforty1728 on 2/11 at 11:23 am
A W-4 asks for a number of "allowances" rather than a number of dependents. It tries to factor in other items such as the child tax credit and the dependent care credit to more accurately withhold taxes throughout the year and prevent a large balance due, or a large refund. As far as a "tax br...

I graduated undergrad with a BS in Accounting in 2010 and completed the masters program in 2011. Best thing that I did while building was put a natural gas spout on my back porch for a grill. Never have to fill a propane tank again, and doing this pre-construction cost an incredible $50 where this would cost over $1,000 to do post-construction. I would also recommend having the contractor dec...

All very valid points and good discussion. I'm a CPA and I feel like Roth's get pushed a little too hard for people who are very young. I believe Roths are a great idea for anyone planning to retire in the next 8-10 years because I do believe rates will be higher over the horizon. I'm not as sure...

"Real" value of a Roth IRA
Posted by Tenforty1728 on 1/30 at 9:24 am
I know Roth IRAs are a popular retirement tool suggested by the money board, but I've gotten to thinking about the "real" value of this money in an economic real dollar sense. I am only 25 years old and in the 25% bracket. If I contribute to a traditional IRA, I will receive 25% of my contribu...

re: Will CPA Discuss Return Prepared in TurboTax?

I'm a CPA and we HATE getting returns that are started by someone else in Turbotax. They usually have numerous inaccuracies and take 3/4 of the time to review as starting from complete scratch. That's why the bills don't seem as low as people think they should for "looking over my turbotax." When...

H&R Block is not cheaper than most CPAs. I'm a CPA and I'd say 50-60% of the time I save my clients more money in unknown deductions than my bill. Also provide year-round quick answers to questions. Plus the personal relationship that is developed over time and having the same person work on your...

re: Best 1099 reporting software?

Quickbooks works good for this if you create a dummy file. Figure out what each 1099 vendor is due, then create a dummy file with a category for each 1099 box. Write dummy checks to these vendors (showing a huge negative cash balance on the register) for the amount they were paid over the year and...

Mortgage interest and property taxes. PMI is also deductible for 2012 and should be for 2013. You have to factor in that if your mortgage interest allows you to itemize then you are also getting a deduction for any charitable contributions and/or state income tax paid that you wouldn't have gotten...

It'll be included in your gross wages in your W-2. You'll need to list your automotive expenses as unreimbursed employee business expenses which will become an itemized deduction. If you don't itemize, that's bad news. If you do there's still a 2% floor on these deductions, but hopefully you've b...

Use an accountant, not an attorney to prepare your claim. Most accountants are not taking a contingency fee, while most attorneys are taking at least 15% of an award. As far as the moral stance on a claim, that is obviously up to the individual. I would feel a little funny taking money I didn...

It is a fantastic app. I've deposited about 25 checks this way over the last year or so that the service has been out and only had trouble with 1-2 checks. You're only head of household if you have a dependent. A lot of people make the mistake that if they own a house they are head of household. This is not true. The fewer exemptions that you claim on your W-4, the more tax will be withheld from your paycheck. It's not an exact science, especia...

Terrible investment. If you want it for your own fun and to write-off some interest that you're going to borrow anyway then it may make sense. I prepare hundreds of tax returns a year and NO ONE makes money off these, especially in those areas. Property taxes and insurance are so outrageous you'd...
