I think the parent should know the finances of a poor college student and offer to pay the ticket if they have bank. If they are not wealthy then a share the costs situation is in order... It's a learning process. I was denied the first lab I wanted to adopt because I live in a townhome without a yard. The second time I was denied adoption, I admitted that it was a wedding present for my husband. Didn't fathom that gifting a dog to someone in your own household would be a problem. ...

Historical performance for small caps may approach 12% since 1926, large caps may be close to 10%. See ibbotson. Most people have allocations of stocks and bonds, not 100% stocks. A straight line assumption of 6.5 to 7% blended return might be better assumption if relying on straight line project...
