He fired a shot, there is some evidence to suggest he wasted it by purposely aiming away. There is no definite proof of this though, but he did write and tell others he would aim away beforehand....

Only partly, in my research I've found he is sometimes criticized too harshly in that regard. His hypocrisy to me is a manifestation of his cowardice. He secretly hired men such as James Callender and Benjamin Franklin Bache to spread villainous calumnies against his political foes, even Washington....
