Just to add to Poodlebrain's thoughts, if you use TurboTax business to do a trust return, and if the trust held and sold MLPs during the year, you must allocate between short term gain, long term gain and reclassify some of the gain to ordinary income. You would need name, address and SS# or FEIN. If relative is not claiming as income they will probably not give you the number. Also, if you happen to find out what their number is, and claim expenses on your return and they have not, could get nasty quick....

If the money is already in the money market account inside the brokerage account, it is next day. Sons trust accounts are in vanguard mutual funds, sell fund day one, next day in money market, next day in his Campus Federal checking account....

I have four brokerage accts at Vanguard, taxable, non-taxable and a trust for each of two sons. Take the time to set up your local bank checking account and link to your money market account within your brokerage account. Takes a week or two because they will do the several cent deposit & withdrawal...

If under 25, I think, on the FAFSA it does not matter if you or he claims that he is independent, parents financial statements and taxes will be included. Only exception is full time military, I think....
