re: Need Snake ID

Doesn't look like a poisonous snake. I tend to kill them when in doubt. When I'm sure it's harmless, I'll relocate it to the wooded area down the street. ...

re: Chevy truck discussion
Posted by dewster on 8/12 at 11:02 am
Good choice. I've had good experiences with Chevrolet trucks. The 4.8L was surprisingly powerful for an entry level V8. I prefer the newer small blocks to the older 305 and 350. Having owned both, I appreciate the flatter-feeling torque curve in the newer motors. I don't like peaky motors ...

re: The "racial impact" on the war on drugs.

I think the neighborhood has a lot to do with it....and I think that race is not a causation factor as much as education, % of single family households, average AGI, and neighborhood population density. I think that police are going to have a greater impact in higher crime areas, which are typi...

I voted for Carr with the hope that a closer primary would scare Lamar a bit. I can't stand him.
This is also why people shouldn't blindly vote party lines.
While I agree with you in a general sense.....this was a primary. You have to choose party so they can setup your ba...

re: Thursday Primary thread for Tennessee - 4 races of interest
Posted by dewster on 8/7 at 7:11 pm
I hope Carr can at least make Lamar Alexander sweat a little. Early results show Alexander ahead 48-44. No early results from the Memphis districts yet, but I suspect Cohen has it. Edit: Alexander now up 51-38. I expect him to do very well in middle and East Tennessee, who are starting t...

re: Serious questions about spending priorities at LSU.
Posted by dewster on 8/7 at 10:31 am
-I think LSU is not aggressive enough in raising funds to build their academic endowment and they don't have enough freedom to raise tuition and fees. I'm disgusted with their lack of focus on building their academics endowment as of late. - I think more students- especially freshmen- should l...

re: Walgreen's decides to remain American
Posted by dewster on 8/7 at 6:59 am
I suppose you can ignore reality by pretending that private capital isn't capable of moving to better environments with ease and vote for the most liberal candidates out there. I'm sure there's no consequences to having some of the highest corporate tax rates out there with thousands of loopholes....

As a retail establishment, their brand is very well known and subject to backlash. If we had lower corporate tax rate and fewer loopholes, perhaps Walgreens would never have considered leaving. I'm glad they are staying, but I think a lot of companies will make the decision to leave in the nex...

The living wage argument attracts colossal morons. I can't believe that many people slept through basic economics. The way they react to a $0.35 charge leads me to believe that they'd flip their shite if every employer was forced to pay low level employees drastically higher wages. There's ve...

re: LSU's 25 highest-paid employees in 2013-14 (and salary database)
Posted by dewster on 8/6 at 3:04 pm
I think the competitive pressure on those salaries have more to do with their actual pay than the ranking of the school. Apparently $124,000 is enough to attract the best in landscape architecture. Get to be head of a business, science, or engineering department and then write a few book...

This Brooks guy from Alabama may have been accurate in his "war on whites" statement. Rangel's party depends on exploiting an racial divisions and building distrust through emotional appeals. The goal is to brand while people as racist and associate whites with their opponents. Rangel's w...

Compliments on the concrete masonry wall between you and the neighbors. I'd like a moat but my city won't allow it. 8' concrete wall is a pretty legit alternative. I'm lucky that my neighbors are pretty cool. The one next to me is a single dad with two sons, so you can imagine how their ...

Do you have a dog? If so, move away. The cop will shoot it next time he investigates a strange occurrence at your house. If you don't have a dog, continue on as normal, including your daily ritual of standing on top of your fire pit. Halloween is coming up and you should decorate your...

re: Have we been misled about how expensive it is to live in the NYC metro?
Posted by dewster on 8/5 at 10:21 am
Exactly. Seems like the middle class either voluntarily moves to the suburbs or gets pushed out to the suburbs. I'm not sure where I'd put Dallas. It lacks geographic barriers to sprawl and no shortage of highways, which keeps housing prices across the metro in check.....but it's also a desirab...
