My understanding is that contributions to a ROTH IRA can be withdrawn any time without penalty even before one turns 59.5. Short question: Let's say I use my ROTH IRA as an emergency fund and I have to withdraw some of my original contribution. Am I able to "re-contribute" those funds at a later time or is that ROTH space permanently gone?...

Seems to me that this is a case where the government interferes with the free market, but I don't see any (or at least much) opposition by anybody from either end of the political spectrum....
