Cisco ASA's - overrated or the shiznit?
Posted by Casty McBoozer on 8/29 at 5:50 pm
I don't particularly care for them. I've set a couple up, and it's a huge time sink if you've got to configure VPNs, etc. I'm sure if you're a pro you can do it faster, but don't even come in here and tell me they're "easy" to set up. There are a lot of hardcore Cisco people out there that just...

I.T. management/monitoring/patch services
Posted by Casty McBoozer on 8/27 at 9:10 pm
Any experiences with them? Like Kaseya, Continuum, etc? We've been messing with Continuum for a while. The sales people love it because there's a good margin in it (the service is cheap) but all the techs hate it because it sucks, is worthless, reporting is horrible, etc. I've heard Kaseya wa...

Comcast business internet - VoIP QoS?
Posted by Casty McBoozer on 8/26 at 12:38 pm
Does anyone know if Comcast honors QoS tagging? Do their SMC modems? I don't see any QoS options in the SMC, so I'm guessing there's nothing there...but if I get a router that's QoS capable, and get the public IP on it, can I help out this VoIP system? Or will Comcast just disregard QoS tagging?...

High availability IIS / MS SQL options

So I have this customer who has a server...RAID 6, redundant power, Server 2008 R2, nothing fancy, your basic run-of-the-mill server. They also have a Datto Siris appliance that uses StorageCraft's ShadowProtect that takes snapshots every hour and backs up the snapshots to Datto's datacenter (i.e...

Tell me why linux wouldn't work for a large majority of residential users
Posted by Casty McBoozer on 8/14 at 5:30 pm
I'm assuming most people just use web, email, printing? Some .doc creation/editing and spreadsheets? What does your average user at home need that linux couldn't easily handle? There must be something I'm overlooking....

If wireless access points/routers/whatever advertise the speed of their device
Posted by Casty McBoozer on 8/11 at 2:05 pm
as the total possible theoretical throughput, then why don't hard-wired devices. I think that would help some people understand that wireless is absolute shite compared to ethernet. In other words, if you have a 24 port gigabit switch, they should advertise 24 Gbps...or use their marketing terms ...

Digging up rocks and mud from old clogged french drain - tool suggestions
Posted by Casty McBoozer on 8/1 at 7:25 am
Shovel is shite. So far I've found the most effective tool is the wide end of a pick axe. Anything better than this? It's only about 1 foot wide by 20 feet long or so. It's packed in there like a bitch, though. Thanks....

Water remaining in A/C drip pan
Posted by Casty McBoozer on 7/30 at 8:36 pm
I recently noticed my overflow line for my A/C was dripping. I thought the main drain line was clogged so I brought some bleach up to the attic, but found the main line had come loose, so the A/C was just dripping directly into the pan. Anyway, I got that straightened out. What I'm concerne...

pressure washer blowing water hoses?
Posted by Casty McBoozer on 7/20 at 11:50 am
I borrowed a little Honda pressure washer from a coworker, it has a GCV160 engine on it. It's not anything high-end, I think it's 2400 psi. I was running the pressure washer for a little while, put it down to climb up a ladder for a minute, and the end of the hose separated from the threaded end....

Toll-by-plate, Destin FL, sent me a bill - WWtOTD?
Posted by Casty McBoozer on 7/3 at 7:32 pm
We went vacationing in Destin at the end of May. Some new toll-by-plate system took a picture of my license plate and they've sent me a bill. It's not much, just $5.50 ($1.50 for each pass and a $2.50 administration fee). Apparently the admin fee can be avoided if you create a pre-paid account :lo...

I've been in I.T. for about 10 years. I can never seem to get on with a big company (unless willing to take helpdesk job and I'm not). I've come close to landing good paying I.T. jobs with larger companies, but it hasn't worked out. I always end up in small companies where there's no room to advan...
