Updated : Unemployment has a maximum of $235 (see list), that seems low

In my job I deal with low income people on Medicare and Medicaid. Today I had a really sad case where a woman had been harassed by her boss and was still working at the age of 70 to make ends meet. Her nerves were shot and she had to quit. I helped her apply for unemployment online. At the end of her application process the website told her she qualified for $60 a week with a maximum of $1560 total benefit. She said she worked her whole life and was only worth 60 bucks a week?

I got to checking on the chart and it says the maximum is $235 per week. I always thought if things ever got too bad I would file unemployment. I could make more money standing out in front of a Walmart with a sign! My heart goes out to anyone on unemployment.

I was a leach once, thought it was over $300. That was 10 years ago though.

That figure is for Mississippi, not sure if it is higher for other states.

My roommate is on unemployment and he gets a check for $535 a week. They have a max of $12,000 though.

I think he said he'll get a check for 20 weeks or so.

It's not being a leach when you're getting your money back.

Exactly. Why should I pay for her poor decisions. She should have gone to school and worked harder to get a better job.

I got laid off 3 years ago and the first thing I did was apply for unemployment. I got like 450 a week.

And I could have gotten that amount for over a year.

Unless he's a business owner, he's not paying unemployment insurance, which is where "unemployment" comes from.

Exactly. I have never collected any form of assistance but if people have paid in I have no problem with them taking it back out, in fact I encourage it.

Maybe not directly but when owners are taxed less they typically pass on some of the extra $ to employees so in a way anyone that works pays in.

People can get a job if they want to work. It may not be the CEO of Exxon, but it beats sitting at home waiting on a check.

This is very true. Anyone that cannot get A JOB within 24 hours of wanting one should just shoot themselves.

Nothing beats sitting at home waiting on a check.

In one way or another it is her fault. Saying so may not be compassionate but it is true.
