Interesting Poll on ESPN regarding ejection for a hit to the head
Posted by juice4lsu on 2/14 at 10:11 pm
Here is the poll

Not to make this political, but I think many fans would agree that with what is happening in the NFL, some might say we are seeing the "wussification" of football. This poll was interesting because it seems to directly fall in line with political leanings. More government heavy states tend to believe the "state" should create more rules to govern our lives or the game. That people and players can't take responsibility for their actions but need someone else to look after them.

Thoughts?

I see where you're going. But I don't think it's all about political leanings

I think a lot of the people in the blue states just really aren't that educated when it comes to football.

If you show someone a poll like this that knows very little about football then I could understand why they would vote the way that they did.

People that have been following football since they were in 3rd grade or earlier understand the game more.

And on the flip side of the coin the states that are the most extreme on favoring it being a bad idea are notoriously the shittiest states

Louisiana - most of you are from there. You know it sucks
West Virginia - Inbred rednecks
Montana - Only one area code in a state that is geographically huge. Total bumfrickfille if I've ever heard of it
South Carolina - First state to secede from the union

I am not saying it is political leanings. I am more saying it is a matter of personal responsibility.

Obviously, there is inherent risk to the game of football. That is why it is entertaining. Similar to the days of gladiators; a very primal fascination.

But in the era of "too big to fail" and "someone should pay for my kid, my food, my house." Big Brother needs to watch over us and help...that mentality is the idea that the authority is the answer.

The thought that we need protection from ourselves. The Nanny State mentality.

I just find the poll fascinating.

ETA: If Admins feel this should be moved to the Poli Board feel free to do so.

The results are interesting, but I agree with this. The Northeast likes basketball, the West has a bunch of different things to do and Illinois has Bears fans.

Sure. And red states like Louisiana are huge net drains on the treasury while blue states like California pay in more than what they take from the feds.

LA is a huge welfare state

Yeah I don't like it either. But that culture is prevalent in Louisiana. New Orleans being the main exception.

From my experience Los Angeles is a basketball and baseball town.

The people there know very little about football unless they're a transplant from another state.

Has nothing to do with financial benefits from government.

Channeling my inner Freakanomics to find a connection in the minds of those who typically vote for more versus less government (or safe guards from personal liability).

In 1906, after several on-field deaths, Teddy Roosevelt gave the colleges an ultimatum: Make the game safer or no more football. I guess a lot of yall would consider that nanny state interference as well.

Football is a great game. It's not supposed to be gladiatorial combat, and while there's risk, people shouldn't leave the game with permanent disability except in rare circumstances.

I wonder how many who play the pussification card actually played the game beyond pee wee level. I was just an average HS player and one shoulder is lopsided because of an old injury. My brother played in HS and a little bit of college, and he has the beginnings of arthritis. I can't imagine what these guys who play long term have to go through.

Make football safer. Fans who enjoy the game for its own sake will adjust. The ones who watch it for some vicarious thrill because they were too chicken shite to put themselves on the line at some point, maybe not. But who gives a shite about them.

Okay. Take away helmets and the thick plastic padding. Australian rules football does not have near the injuries of American football, and injuries have gone up tremendously with more padding.

A false sense of security makes players act in ways they wouldn't without that sense of security.

I agree with that. Also go back to single platoon football. 225 lb linemen, 175 lb backs and lbers.

I'm not sure that makes sense. The reason the helmets and padding were added is because there were a lot of on the field football deaths in teh early 20th century. The protective gear largely eliminated those but certainly does not protect the player from chronic injuries (CTE or arthritis for example).

To some extent the desire to knock someone senseless has become a part of the American game of football and comparing this sport with a similar sport may not be a fair comparison because of cultural differences ingrained in the sport.

I'm not sure ejecting anyone will solve this. Many of the helmet to helmet hits are incidental.

With the exception of California, all the blue states on that list suck at football.
