| I get the love Duane Allman but what about Dickie? Posted by chuckie on 2/12 at 3:38 am Probably one of the most under rated guitarists ever. Understandable given who he would inevitably compared too? Really deserves a lot of props for keeping ABB going? Reply Back to Top |
quote: Dickie didnt keep ABB. if anyone single person is responsible for that its Gregg. But Dickie was a great guitarist no doubt but when you're compared to the likes of Duane Allman, Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks, well you just dont stand out as much. He will live forever in my mind, if for nothing else, for writing in memory of Elizabeth reed Reply Back to Top |
quote: Dickey did most of the writing and after Duane's death took on learning the slide on addition taking over lead. Greg and dickey were both a-holes goin into the 80s however Cowboy dickey is the man This post was edited on 2/12 at 7:17 am Reply Back to Top |
quote: If dickey quit then the ABB could still carry on. Without Gregg it's over. I don't think you can say that any one person kept the band going though. Reply Back to Top |
| You are right but honestly you could say warren get the band afloat after the 80s more then both. Reply Back to Top |
| Overshadowed is a better word Reply Back to Top |

| After doing some digging, I discovered that I really was not an ABB fan. I was/am a Dickey Betts fan. I was very surprised. Reply Back to Top |
| He may have been a dick in the 80s but last April I was at a warren Haynes concert in Oxford MS. Well an older couple was sitting behind where we were standing and out of courtesy we kept asking them if they could see and making sure no one else blocked their view. After the first set the couple got up and thanked us turns out it was dickey and his wife got a picture and they were very nice. I know I know CSB Reply Back to Top |
| How shite faced was dickey? Reply Back to Top |
| To my surprise he wasn't drunk, or didn't seem to be. He was with his wife and daughter. Reply Back to Top |
quote: What I love about the story (other than the fact that they're a big part of the character basis for "Stillwater" in Almost Famous), is that after Duane died, Dickie had to learn how to play slide to do all of Duane's parts and basically taught himself the technique while practicing over a long night of traveling. He just turned 70 in December (and looks every bit of it). Trivia: Betts later wrote (and sang lead on) the ABB's biggest hit - "Ramblin' Man" - a song kept out of the #1 spot by Greg's future wife, Cher's "Half Breed". | I was listening to a David Allen Coe song this week, and right before a solo, David says, "Dickey Betts". Can't remember the song. Reply Back to Top |
quote: It still baffles me that Ramblin Man was their biggest hit. I mean its a decent song but its one of my least favorite ABB tunes Reply Back to Top |
| Easily in my top two. Can't stand to hear Greg sing mostly, but do like Melissa a little. Reply Back to Top |

quote: If it makes you feel better - they haven't disowned it, but don't play it much live because it's not subject to much improvisational interpretation. I do think that reflects on their overall opinion of the song. Reply Back to Top |
quote: It just doesn't even sound like an allman bros song. It was a Dickie Betts song with the Abb as his backing group Reply Back to Top |

| I have never..... And I mean never heard anyone say that they preferred Dickie's voice to Gregg's.... Just kind of shocked me is all Reply Back to Top Refresh |
