NASA Planning to Send another Rover to Mars in 2020

If you thought NASA’s latest Mars landing was a nail-biter, get ready for a sequel.

The space agency on Tuesday announced plans to launch another mega-rover to the red planet in 2020 that will be modeled after the wildly popular Curiosity.

To keep costs down, engineers will borrow Curiosity’s blueprints, recycle spare parts where possible and use proven technology including the novel landing gear that delivered the car-size rover inside an ancient crater in August. The announcement comes as NASA reboots its Mars exploration program during tough fiscal times.

“The action right now is on the surface, and that’s where we want to be,” said NASA sciences chief John Grunsfeld.

I'm still anxious to see what they found on the surface of mars a couple of weeks ago

when they normally build a satellite like that, they build two of them, so there's a spare if something happens....

A whole lot of tire tracks behind the rover that can't be explained by the rover.

We need to build a moon base before then.

Moon base before 2050?

Umm, way before then. We have the technology. If I told someone in 1969 that we still didn't have a Moon Base, they would be angry and embarrassed for the future of this nation. Its been nearly 50 years since we first went to the Moon, and we still haven't managed to return since the 70s? Its sad how far the space program has sunk since the 70s.

I know we have the technology, but how practical/beneficial will it be to have one?

There's no doubt about that. The space race was such an awesome point in man's history. Give a pile of very smart people a challenge and enough resources and they can make amazing things happen.

Boy if we could ever return to that glory.

It won't pay off for a good 20-40 years to be sure, but it would be heavily beneficial to the US. We'd own the fricking Moon more or less and anyone who wanted to get resources from it would have to contend with us. It also serves as the optimal location to blast off to asteroids and other planets compared to Earth.

The cost to start up a Moon Base is .5% of the current price the War on Terror has cost us. And to those saying they won't see it pay off until near the end of their lifetime, every generation will use this bull shite excuse until China or Russia make it there first. We need to grab the bulls by the balls if we are still to be the dominant super power for centuries to come.

I just really think we should take our time going to Mars and make sure that everything is accounted for, unless of course the Chinese or the Russians make a grab to get there first, which we can't have any of that shite. Its crazy to think in a decade we could actually be there though.

They always send something back. Lots of data and very cool pictures.
