| re: Jindal shutting down LSU hospital system in order to privatize it Love me some Jindal. As a doctor I see the government waste on a daily basis and he is at least trying to cut into the problem. No way a state the size of La requires the number of medical training programs it now funds. We must start slowing the spending while at the same time attempting to cover the indigent the best way possible. Reply Back to Top |

| Yeah, the psych system has already been doing this for the past year. The whole state system is basically private now. It just causes a rift in the equilibrium for the time being. People still don't really know what is going on. This adjustment is a bitch. I can only imagine what it will be like for medsurg, etc. I think all healthcare pros are going to be pissed for the next few years. Reply Back to Top |
| Disclaimer: Although I am an LSU doc, because I have been on the "privatization" side of resident education and clinical care for 4 years, I am not impacted personally by these cuts; many persons that I respect greatly will be. The implications of the closures go far beyond just indigent care as several have pointed out. As some have discounted LSU and EKL as a hospital and a training program, let me point out that 67 internal medicine and subspecialists in internal medicine that practice in Baton Rouge trained at EKL in Internal Medicine. That is just from the Internal Medicine Residency Program at EKL. Add other programs such as surgery (which is primarily based in N.O.), ob-gyn (which was privatized to Woman’s Hospital in the past year), ER, and the impact is far greater. Then think about LSU residency programs in New Orleans, Lafayette, etc, and you cannot begin to imagine how shitty your access to healthcare will become if the residency programs in the LSU system are not supported. There are significant ramifications that go well beyond shutting down a dilapidated hospital. There is no doubt that years of cronyism, poor management and financial irresponsibility by LSU are at blame here, but this is a lot bigger deal than just balancing a budget (and I am politically very conservative). JMO…Jindal has little to lose. In six years, he will point to how he saved the state in excess of $300 million dollars and ensured access to better facilities (which he will term as “care”) as one of his crowning moments. The devil will be in the details. For a list of docs that trained in internal medicine at EKL and where they practice, go here: LINK Reply Back to Top |
| Don't forget the millions of dollars in federal research grants that will head out of state to other universities now. This is a real fatal blow to LSU medical school. Reply Back to Top |

| It's all about taking the Medicare money and giving it to private hospitals who will charge the goverent more money once the public hospitals are gone. LSU will suffer tremendously. Reply Back to Top |
| why shouldnt they die in a ditch? if a dumbass makes the choice to smoke, gets cancer, and cant pay for it well..... then seek charity or help from family. but why the frick should i have to pay for somebody else's bad choices? btw my biological mother is a smoker and will prolly be in this situation and I feel the same way about her. am I an a-hole, maybe, but dont ask me to pay for somebody else's bad choices. also as far as closing schools keep- LSU UNO ULL ULM Tech Mcneese Southern maybe grambling(trying to be realistic on the last 2) close the rest. For those hating on mcneese, graduates there make the 4th highest average salary in the state and it has a effect on attracting/keeping many plants that support the swla economy. It should not be closed. As much as I dont like this decision, its one of the few jindal could make. Every time there is talk of closing a school, people freak and it gets pushed back at jindal. If you dont like the decision, contact your legislator and request they call a constitutional convention. Reply Back to Top |

| Switch SELU with ULM and let Tech take the Pharmacy school. SELU is like the 2nd largest school in the state. Reply Back to Top |
quote: then blame the legislature not the Gov. He makes the cust where he can. The bottom line is we dont have the money!! There is nothing agenda related about this. We cant afford it plain and simple. Reply Back to Top |
quote: Not sure where you get your info, but the vast majority of LSU medical students are from Louisiana. In regards to the cuts, nobody wants their piece of government funding to be the one that's cut. The chancellor of LSUHSC-Shreveport seems very anti-Jindal. But, cuts have to be made. Someone (maybe a lot of someones) is going to have to bite the bullet. One last note: This past fiscal year, Louisiana had a surplus! Reply Back to Top |

| and i should be forced to pay for it why? they have insurance for that. If you cant afford insurance then you have been making bad choices your whole life, your irresponsibility and failure to plan does not constitute an emergency on my part and sure as frick should not lead to the state taking money from me to fund somebody else's bad choices. and sure as hell shouldn't do it with the threat of a gun or being locked in a cage. and i would be more then happy to donate to a charity for the kinds of people you are talking about, but we werent talking about those people when i posted what i did Reply Back to Top |

| yea but sela can be combined with lsu imo. to many universities in that area. and i agree monroe doesnt need ulm and tech should take parts of it. same should happen with sela but after rethinking i believe your way is better then my original way but the way i just posted is best.
