Would you trek through here solo?

I grew up around this area and have always wanted to get to Lake Ponchartrain through the swamp and the bayou.

I have figured out a path, which I am not showing you as it would give away my location (as well as TigerTatorTots' ). I have a GPS and description of each turn I have to make. What I am looking at is ~3 mi 1 way canoe trip to get from the back of a subdivision to the lake. I'll have a 12 foot canoe (I think) and am planning on paddling when I can and portaging when I can't paddle. I'm bringing a pole just in case.

It seems the hardest part will be the beginning because all of the natural waterways seem to be overgrown with plants/grasses. And what's worse is this image was taken in the fall it looks like.

So would any of you guys attempt this solo? In the muck, bugs, heat, and among coyotes and alligators?

If I make it out and don't feel like going back or can't find my way back, I'm just going to canoe to the Tchefuncte River Bridge.

Do it during daylight, have a gps, and have some hip boots. Keep an eye out for snakes. .22 pistol wouldn't hurt.

I wouldn't do it this time of year because if you have an emergency, no one can really get to you....I think it would be a blast in early spring though, before the vegetation gets kickin too much....and when heat stroke is not so likely...

It's not like you're going to get lost. It's not that big of an area. I'd do it in the spring though.

I am worried about the heat, but I can handle it if I prepare for it.

I didn't think about snakes.

I've never had the time to try it and I think this is the best imagery I've ever seen of this area since I've been looking into it.

I just think it's cool to find a hidden way to the lake.

I will say that just east of that location, slightly east of fountianblue, I got into the middle of a bunch of big gators. Not sure if they occupy the area your looking at, butnid think they would. I see gators almost every paddle, but that is the only time I turned around and left the area due to them.

Cane Bayou?

It seems a lot more dense in the area I am in. I've dealt with those gators before, and we did the same thing. Turned around. One was as big as the canoe.

I have been on every part of that property. Used to be owned by the denenger family. Now owned by the city of mandeville for wetlands assimilation. I have deer, duck, and gator hunted there. I have frogged there and I have fished there. We used to lease it from the denengers. Killer duck hunting when I was in high school.

If you plan on walking good luck. We used to ride in on 4wheelers from the north during droughts and couldn't get 1/3 of the way.

Canoeing down the chinchuba on the east is possible and there is also an old logging canal to go down. The whole place is pretty shallow and loaded with animals.

Ive been in this area behind the Sanctuary before and there were not many places to paddle. Hip boots were best option when i was over there.

Thanks for the lowdown. I figured it was owned by someone at one point. If all else fails, I'll try that canal that is really close to what looks like the very back of Woodridge/Beau Rivage. If I remember right, that part of it has another name.

Would be a god trip. Just tell somebody where you going and expected return time.

They will spot the buzzards to locate the body.

Pectus, me and a few buds have tried that before when we were kids, took us a day to get lost and meander around and find our way back.

We used to hunt yall's lease . Damn dude, we have hunted a lot of the same places. First Kentwood and now the marsh. Hunted Hog Island a decent amount and also that smaller island. We would go in from where that new office building is now and from Penn Chappel Rd. We also went in from that basically ditch from the river. Man, yall had some hog traps out there. Had that guy on the argo run within 20ft from me a couple of times. I actually had an 80lb doe walk right up to me(within 5ft) one time walking out. My buddies dad built a camp in the middle of the marsh out there, but Katrina took care of it.

I wouldn't ever bring a canoe out there though. It is hard enough just walking. Some places have little ditches or big ditches to cross. Really, at most spots, there are alligators. Taking the high bridge in Madisonville to the rice fields has a lot of gators. Coming in from the river east to the marsh is shallow and has gators. Best bet would be the Sawmill canal. It is somewhat wider, but still has alligators. Big trees back there.

Walking from Beau Rivage to Crystal Lake to the lake is a fun thing that we used to do before the Sanctuary was there. If you take a canoe, you can get in that canal west of Lewisburg and get to a decent amount of places to paddle. Just remember, there are alligators in most of the canals and such.

I didn't think you were with us that time, but I have such a shitty memory, who knows. It was pretty funny seeing people freaking out and wondering if their parents were looking for them.

I hunted all over these spots with the arrows. Also used to hunt the Low Bridge, the slave ditch, off of that last turn at the beginning of Lake Rd., Guste Island, that long skinny pond right across from Trinity Marine, and probably 10 different other places. I was a member at Money Hill, but we could hit up the spots around Mandeville and Madisonville with the quickness before or after school

Sweet breakdown guys. I am worried about the gators a bit, but they live there yearround.

I think I can make the little canals that aren't showing up in my canoe. When I can't I'll just pull it over an embankmemt or thick brush, and if I have to, I'll portage it on my shoulders.

Like I said, I have the route planned with my GPS, so I don't have to wander as much, just meander.

Until looking at it closer recently, I had no idea The Sanctuary went that far back.

I guess winter is better due to less vegetation.

Would make the trip as far as seeing a little easy, BUT, there is a good chance that the water will get blown out somewhat. Look a tides and look at any cold fronts to see how the water level does.

Take plenty of water, more than you might need in case you get lost or stranded. Don't forget skeeter spray. Also be prepared to spend the night, again incase you get lost or stranded. No I would not try it this time of year. Good luck.

I think you might be underestimating it a bit. The vegetation in the marsh/edge of swamp can get very thick. I cruised a piece of property in Thistlethwaite WMA that had palmettos 7ft high and at least 6 inches of water on the whole property. After 3 hours I was dizzy and throwing up. Not a place you wanna be.

Some spots are loaded down, but most will move away

Way easier said then done. Like I said, some spots are hard to walk through without a canoe

Definitely bring a compass and learn how to use it. It is pretty easy to get turned around in there. I wouldn't ever count on a GPS to be my sole means of navigation. You think, "hell, if I get lost, I have the lake, river, and houses right there". You would be thinking wrong because it is farther than you thnk. Hell, I didn't ever bring one in the woods with me while working. It was all compass work or line-of-sight stuff. I just dont trust them as much as a compass.

The Sanctuary went that far back.

I think around '97 or'98 there was only a minuscule portion that was the Sanctuary. Crosby actually built a road back there before he got the okay(permits, wetland mitigation).

Some sawgrass can get 5 or 6ft tall in the winter.

If you lay out where you are planning on putting in and going, it would be a lot easier to give you specific advice. That "canal" thing is a huge powerline. The only canal in Beau Rivage is the one at the end of Heavens Dr and it just goes into the retention pond. If you are talking about the edge of the marsh to sawmill canal, that is a different story
