| Fantastic Lunch Option on a budget Posted by Mike da Tigah on 7/3 at 5:54 pm Consider this: 1 Burger, Fries, and a Coke at a fast food drive up window costs anywhere from what 5-6 bucks? Sound about right? Well, although I go here as often as possible while running the roads during the day in order to get as healthy as I can quick bite to eat because I usually don't have a lot of time to kill for lunch and yet don't want to eat garbage either, something just struck me as I checked out at Whole Foods today. I get a significantly higher than average quality roast beef sandwich on freshly baked focaccia bread, house made aioli, fresh greens, gorgonzolla bleu cheese, and pressed in a panini press COST? 3.49 Add a 1.25 for vitamin water and the total with tax is now $ 5.17 for a more fresh and tasty sandwich than can be found most everywhere in this city, so far beyond anything at Subway it's laughable, like fall out on the floor take your clothes off and getting mad and crazy laughable. The difference? All I had to do was get out of my vehicle and go into the store because they don't have drive up windows, but then neither do most Subways that I'm aware of. WHOLE FOODS mind you, not just any old grocery store, but the big price daddy itself. So when you hear people say you just can't eat good food for 5 bucks, I give you Whole Foods little Bistro thing they have going on. Yeah, it's a chain grocery store, but you know what? Until a local establishment can pull off somewhat healthy and equally tasty sandwiches like that for 3.49 each with similar quality ingredients, then I have to give it to them, especially when you don't feel like a fat arse after you're done. When in the area, I think I'm making this a regular lunch spot. I still like Maxwells as well, and will hit them up because they're local and do good sandwiches, but give credit where credit is due. Good is good, and geezum man, for 3.49 a sandwich, this should embarass the hell out of any local sandwich place in the area... Here me Dempseys? Raise your bar folks. It's embarassing. Heck, charge 6 bucks for an equal sandwish and I'll go to you instead to support you, but how can I pass that up? Give me a solid reason. Reply Back to Top |

| check out the chicken tortilla soup in the back by the grill also Reply Back to Top |
| I completely agree with your post. Problem is the average American fat arse wants something quick, convenient and cheap. Physically walking into the store, grabbing items individually and standing at a cash register doesn't appeal to lazy people. Reply Back to Top |
| I can make a great small/medium salad at any Ochsner, and it usually cost $1.50 - $1.80 and I fill up my water bottles with the water from my cooler that I fill for free at Kentwood or Abita Springs I bet I eat cheaper/healthier than 99% of yall Reply Back to Top |
quote: Sounds like they undercharged you. Every time I get that sandwich plus a vitamin water, it's usually more like $9-10. Reply Back to Top |

The options suck horribly around most all areas of this place, and I'd say most areas of the country as well. It's depressing really. Reply Back to Top |

| I do this shite all the time here in Houston at Central Market or Whole Foods and I've never gotten a sandwich for less than 6 bucks. Add a bottle of water or some fruit to it and it's like 10-12 bucks. Reply Back to Top |

| Same here. Nothing about WF is cheap. I Eat there at least once a week for dinner or lunch. Ive never spent less than 7 or 8$ at the very least This thread is misleading This post was edited on 7/3 at 6:42 pm Reply Back to Top |
Posted by Mike da Tigah on 7/3 at 6:53 pm to offshoreangler quote: The portion size I had was more than a burger at most every drive up fast food joint, but let's say for instance that I actually wanted double that amount of food for lunch. I'm still only 6 dollars for the sandwich, and if I just bring a frozen bottle of water with me in the morning, by the time it's time for lunch it's melted and I'm ready to roll. Lunch for roughly the same amount of money it takes to eat at one of our drive up fast food chains. And who is serving fresh focaccia, roast beef with fresh greens, hand made aioli, and gorgonzola bleu mother fricking cheese for 6 bucks, pressed with the crunch, the goo, the tang, and the goodness at a fast food joint? Answer.... NOT AVAILABLE. So, again, when people say it's impossible to eat good for that kind of money, it's not. This post was edited on 7/3 at 7:00 pm Reply Back to Top |
| you're looking at $8+ with tax for just about any sandwich. I agree with you that is is good, and definitely worth it if you can afford the time and money. but it takes at least 20 minutes to go in and out. You're coming out with just the sandwich. if you want a little bag of chips and a drink its closer to $13-15. people eat fast food cause it is convenient and cheap, and because they really dont care about the quality of their food. Posted by Mike da Tigah on 7/3 at 7:43 pm to Lester Earl quote: You can find NO in anything Lester. You can also find a YES if you want to, and it's pretty much on a silver platter. quote: True, and because they're addicted to it, and yes, because they don't care about their food. Fact is Lester, the amount of food I got for 3.49 was plenty sufficient to satisfy me for lunch. I think another issue is America's addiction to portion size over quality. It's more important to get an arse load of adequate to sub par food than really good food that doesn't make you feel like you've reached a state where you feel like you can't eat another bite. All we've really done is stretch our stomachs out over the years to the point where we reach what we think is a full state when it's over full, and have tricked our body into thinking that we need all that food when we can really live on a whole lot less. It's the American way, but then there's a really good reason we're the most overweight nation in the world. I mean look, people can eat whatever they want, but when people come up with excuses that they just can't eat better because they're on a budget, there are examples like this to chew on, and that's the real thing that gets me. Here it is. Lunch for 5 dollars and a better sandwich than you can find in probably 95% or greater of the places in this city, and NONE that are doing it that cheap. Reply Back to Top |
Posted by mups on 7/3 at 9:37 pm to DanglingFury I can't remember paying any less than $6 for a sandwich at Whole Foods.Reply Back to Top |
| I would say the $7 catfish at Chef KD's is the best lunch (or anytime for that matter) deal out there. Reply Back to Top |
| Mike put a big sugar coating on this. You'll pay 8+ for at the least for any sandwhch Reply Back to Top |
| well I work 45 minutes from whole foods but very near a blimpies so I am screwed. Reply Back to Top |
Posted by Mike da Tigah on 7/4 at 8:39 am to Lester Earl quote: Yeah, I really didn't sugar coat anything. I was pretty factual about the prices, and it probably has more to do with how much you think you need/want to eat at lunch or not. These are the facts: I received a 1/2 sandwich which was roughly a 4" x 8" sandwich that I felt filled me up enough for lunch and a bottle of vitamin water for 5.17. The sandwich itself was 3.49 plus tax. It constituted about the same volume of food you will find in any burger at a fast food restaurant or greater. The whole sandwich goes for 6 bucks and some change. I know because I saw the menu written above the station. What I demonstrated with facts is how you can spend the same amount of money on really really good food for the same amount of money you spend at a fast food drive up window, if you will just simply plan better. You can get a 6 dollar sandwich for those who feel the need to eat a bunch of food at lunch, bring a bottle water with you or when you get back to work get water from the cooler, and eat a hell of a lot better, tastier, and healthier food, and not feel like you need to take a nap afterwards if you use your head. Yeah, if you get fruit, and sides to go along with the larger sandwich, it's going to cost more, especially since it's Whole Foods, but do I need that, that's the question. People looking to find NO will find a way to dismiss this, but those who want to find YES, will see the logic in this and want to eat better for the same amount of money they currently spend on lunch. It's all in how you choose to see things. I didn't sugar coat anything, especially considering what you're getting for the money, a better sandwich than you will find pretty much anywhere in this city, and certainly for the money.
