| I have yet to listen to one that remotely sounds great. It's not my favorite Joy Division song but it's such an iconic song that it's hard to do it justice. I almost feel that way about all their covers. However, Peter Murphy does a good job covering Joy Division's songs but maybe it's just b/c I like Peter Murphy so much. Reply • Back to Top |

| The original. Nothing else. My top 10 JD songs: 1. Transmission 2. Love Will Tear Us Apart 3. Shadowplay 4. Disorder 5. Dead Souls 6. Digital 7. Isolation 8. Colony 9. Autosuggestion 10. Candidate ^Sorry, just felt the need to put that in there. *The Killers do a decent remake of Shadowplay, but not good enough. I think the best attempt at covering a JD song (and I do not count anything by New Order simply because it would be like Brian Johnson singing "Ride On" for ACDC instead of deceased Bon Scott) was Nine Inch Nails's "Dead Souls" which appeared on The Crow soundtrack. That song is actually what made me start listening to Joy Division in 1994, plus I had also seen the video of "Love Will Tear Us Apart" on 120 Minutes one night back in '93. Joy Division is not for everyone. My wife hates them. Of course, she hates a lot of cool music and if taste in tunes was the main goal when searching for a mate, I wouldn't have touched her. There are, surprisingly, still a great number of late 20's-late 30's folks who do not know Joy Division...or maybe they've heard 1-2 songs. I recently turned a friend on wh was a big fan of New Order, ironically, and what made him a fan of them was "Blue Monday", which of course he first heard on MTV and thought this band called Orgy was playing a top 10 of all-time tune. That's what's great about music...you can actually come full circle and soon realize how much better you are for it. Finally, if you want to see two great movies that chronicle Joy Division then see "Control" which is all about Ian Curtis and his demise, along with the band's signing with Tony Wilson's Factory Records. Then, 24 Hour Party People is a quite "limeily" humorous film that is more about Tony Wilson and his experience with his label's bigger bands such as Joy Division, New Order, The Happy Mondays, and the rave scene and the dj. BOth are fantastic, however, CONTROL is a much more realalistic account of Joy Divison -- brilliant movie. Both show the true colors (or lack thereof) of Manchester as an industrial city that was once the biggest shite stain in Earth, but was made into a rose by the amount of awesome musicians that derived from its tough, urban environment.
