quote: Because I was under the impression that they run relatively similar footballing schemes? Martinez put into place the scheme that Rodgers continued at Swansea. They both run a variation of the 3-4-3 with a heavy emphasis on passing. Diame isn't disciplined enough (IMO) to man one of the CM roles where he is required to hold his position. No matter really since that rumor seems to have held no merit (like 90% of the ones out there). But I agree with you. We will have to settle with guys that are off the grid for a while. Rodgers is going to have to nickle and dime on free transfers and young talent (with a couple of small splurges...hopefully) until LFC is put back on the map (in terms of table position). quote: this is what excites me so much about this undertaking. Rodgers was successful with much 'lesser' players at Swansea and did it with attacking, attractive soccer. That's incredibly rare. This isn't Hodgson parking the bus or playing relegation proof nonsense, this was going against some of the best in the world guns blazing. If we're able to pick players that aren't world class yet we can be very successful. From there success will breed more success and the ability to get world class players. It really could be the start of something special. Reply Back to Top |
| when the frick does the 2011-2012 season thread end adn the 2012/13 season thread begin? shouldn't it have started already with the release of the schedule, kits, and transfers? Reply Back to Top |

quote: could be a great point, I don't really know. Just going off memory (which is pretty worthless in a discussion like this) but I don't remember thinking Wigan and Swansea played similarly. Or at least the execution never seemed as sharp. Reply Back to Top |
| Wigan's execution wasn't nearly as sharp (or successful) as Swansea's. That was exactly my point. I know for a fact Martinez runs the 3-4-3. I know traditionally Rodgers runs a 4-2-2, but he has experimented a bit with the 3-4-3. He is trying to mock Barcelona's style of play, after all, and they have transitioned to a 3-4-3 recently. Rodgers recently drew this sketch up of his formation: Notice the pitch is divided into 8 zones. See the zones the CMs are responsible for? That's why I was saying I don't think Diame is disciplined enough to play in Martinez's system, let alone Rodgers Tiki-Taka scheme. I know Rodgers can come in and immediately implement this scheme with the personnel he currently has. We already have bench players that can man the midfield roles better than Diame can. With Joe Cole and Aquilani coming back, we will have an abundance of mids who should do well with Rodgers scheme. Henderson, Gerrard, Shelvey, Sigurdsson, Cole, Aquilani, Lucas. And with Henderson, Shelvey and Sigurdsson all still very young, Rodgers can mold their play permanently to fit this scheme over the next few years (hopefully). We certainly have the defenders and type of goalie Rodgers wants (he views the outfield as having 11 players all working as one - including the goalie). Pepe has the distribution and is good with his feet which Rodgers loves. We have the forwards but could use an additional fast paced winger (maybe 2 if Downing continues his incompetence). With Kuyt and Maxi gone, we could use a couple small (talking money here) forward signings (Kalou on a free??) that's sole role is to play cup matches and midweek games. | fantastic analysis Reply Back to Top |
| I'm confused, I thought Rodgers primarily ran a 4-3-3, that often could resemble a 3-4-3 in attack? Also, if he is relying on Enrique to play as a LWB, I have my concerns of him in the attacking 3rd. Maybe, thats why Ive seen us linked with left backs... Johnson would be perfect for this role... Looks like this is the third shirt ![]() Reply Back to Top |
| I can't tell if that is gold or orange but I will buy that kit if it is gold and purple. Mentioned it earlier when that purple and gold kit surfaced but since I am not a Liverpool fan I was thinking about putting #9 Rush on the back. What say you Meursault? Reply Back to Top |
| Also, England should thank its lucky stars that Stevie G is healthy. He is the talisman for that team. His passing and movement off the ball are fantastic. He is playing like we was 5 years ago. The old guard of Terry, Gerrard, Cole and Rooney (70+ caps) are playing well. I hope they knock Italy out!!!! Reply Back to Top |
| I personally don't get shirts with NOB. I've been burned on that. However, for a legendary player like Ian, I would consider it but only on an old Crown Paints jersey. But that's just me. Reply Back to Top |
quote: For fricking sure! He's having an amazing tournament. Putting in his best work ever in an England shirt. JMO. Reply Back to Top |
