Anyone following the United Airlines hissyfit

They're being bitches b/c Hobby and Southwest is going to get an international terminal to fly to Mexico and South America.

They announced immediate job cuts eventhough this whole thing won't have an impact until 2015.

LINK

They had already pretty much fricked any goodwill left over from Continental already in Houston.

That's exactly what it is, a hissy fit. I'd like to see some numbers on what destinations make up what % of United's international flights out of IAH. I doubt SWA having Mexico flights is going to hurt them too much.

Especially if looking at the huge drop off in cruise visits to Mexico is any indication about the profitability/volume of flights that will be going there in the future.

I am interested in what other Latin/South American destinations are on the horizon.

Right. I can't imagine many people really wanting to go over there right now. I've been told some of the vacation spots are ok, but I'm not personally going to find out anytime soon. Having said that, there is a large portion of our population that are native mexicans, or 1st gen mexican americans and most of them seem to be comfortable going back to certain spots.

I got into it with a friend of mine that works for United. She didn't like that I told her that United was trying to hold Houston hostage over this and they were trying to prevent competition.

Growing up I was all continental.

But I see myself preferring SWA now.

No other reason than cost and conveience.

SWA credit card gave me 4 free flights / I prefer easy in and out Hobby over huge IAH / when paying cash for flights, cost is always much cheaper with SWA.

Definitely seems like they had these cuts planned already and were just looking for a scapegoat.

Hobby extension wont be done for 3 years but they are starting layoffs this fall

UA is going to be hurt by this and probably significantly....have you seen the types of folks that trundle down to destinations like Cancun and Playa Del Carmen....it's the perfect clientelle for the SW cattle cars.

What are you trying to say? I haven't had Southwest beat a deal that I could find from another carrier in over 3 years.

T fly weekly out of NE Ohio into the SE USA almost weekly. Pretty much use United because I can fly direct. It does usually cost $50-100 more but I don't have to connect and deal with the SWA mentality. That being said, United trying to protect its turf. I say let 'em have the terminal and extra flights, its just gonna drive down prices for teh rest.

I really do not like southwest, but it serves it's purpose. I would much rather fly Delta (ATL homer) but when Delta flights are 600 and SW flights are 300 I am picking SW every time.

I never run into this large a disparity. Are y'all booking late or something?

I usually can only book 7-14 days in advance, unless for conferences, trade shows etc, Business priorities change to much to book further out than that.

It was about a month in advance. I think it is also just really expensive to fly into dfw.

DFW, Memphis, are two of the most expensive airports to fly into. Not much competition.

I just flew united today to Orlando. This frickers almost made me miss my flight to Disney. They had two damn lines for security in premier access. And they didn't let me print boarding passes for the rest of my party so I had to wait 30 minutes for that. Thankfully we made it, but they made it extra stressful. They should have been better prepared.....I was there an hour and a half early so it's not like I was late getting there.

Unfortunately I think many others missed their flight to Orlando. That would have sucked for kids waiting to see Mickey mouse.

Ever since United took over Continental, the service has gone down. Their attitude is terrible. For example:

It immediately canceled planned service to Auckland, New Zealand.

can someone please tell me how SW flying south of the border should affect flights to New Zealand?

I guess Obama couldn't help them anymore, so they try Chicago style tactics. F them.

the security lines in terminal C are the worst. When flying out of there you have to plan on being at the airport 1hr 45 min ahead.

Damn I didn't realize they did that. I was looking forward to that in the future. Qantas just opened a flight out of Dallas to Australia which is nice, but living in Houston I was looking forward to the FF points.
