| Why softball's run to CWS is a BIG deal for LSU long term For those like me who live by football, love baseball and support basketball, but also support other LSU sports, LSU’s softball season is a very big deal imo. Here is why.. • Until now, ULL has (and still does IMO) the better program. But like Women’s hoops overtaking La Tech about 10 years ago, we are seeing a shift. LSU has more money, better facilities and may be about to pass ULL for good. LA recruits prefring LSU would be a major thing. • As I (and others) have said all season, we have two of the best pitchers in the college game this year. Mack is a senior and Fico a junior, this was the year to do something. • Al, UF, UGA have better program than LSU, but no one in SEC has won NC yet so we are very much in the mix to be a top SEC program going forward. • Fico is from CT and we got her over Bama. This was a major coup and she is proven up to the hype (she was something like 132-4 in HS!) • LSU under Girard won SEC titles in past 10 years and went to CWS in 04, but to be honest, things had seemed to plateau in past two years- we beat teams we were supposed to beat and lost to top teams. • New Coach should be able to recruit very well now (our field is among best in country) and Fico is back. A very good core group is also back. Even if you “don’t care about softball” we are going to have the sport and we mine as well be good (goes for other sports too). For those who follow the sport, like to hear your thoughts. Reply Back to Top |
| Good read...I am proud of the program. Beating AM and Missouri on the road is quality. I hope they can win a few in OKC. Reply Back to Top |
| weren't you bashing the hire recently and the team recently? Reply Back to Top |
| I agree with OP. If we are going to play it, be the best at it. ul-L/La Tech/whoever else in Louisiana shouldn't be better than us in anything. Reply Back to Top |
| Excited for the girls. Hope they do well and bring home the NC trophy. Reply Back to Top |
| I always pull for all LSU teams, but I am going to be honest, it is softball, about 100 people actually care. Reply Back to Top |
quote: not really. in an age where budgets mean everything, i could care less about programs that run huge decifits, successful or not women's basketball at a peak of success proved that they cannot support themselves maybe softball could be different, but i wouldnt get my hopes up Reply Back to Top |
Posted by UnderCntrl on 5/29 at 8:49 am to secman12 I may just be ignorant on their history, but other than their WCWS run a couple years ago, is ULL a better historical program? Reply Back to Top |

quote:He is full of shite ... Many LSU fans care and watched and rooted for the Lady Tigers. What they did was remarkable and I am proud of them. LSU as a whole has nothing to lose and much to gain by positive publicity. Reply Back to Top |
quote: In the Title IX era, as long as the athletic department can meet budget and turn a profit, the individual contributions of deficit from each program do not matter as much. Football is and always will be king. After that, baseball. But the requirement to have equality in women's scholarships will always lead to deficits in individual programs. Reply Back to Top |
| There's a difference between rooting for a team and caring. Caring is a pretty strong word. If the LSU softball team gets knocked out, the vast majority of fans will be like "aww that sucks" and then go about their day. A far different reaction from when one of the Big 3 loses any sort of big game. Reply Back to Top |

| I am enjoying their run through the tournament. They have a very nice looking, good young coach. The Girls team will do well in the future. And yes, most Tiger fans support all the teams. Men and women, the money is going to be spent. Nothing wrong with winning. Reply Back to Top |
quote: I you go by WCWS trips than yes.. ULL has went 5 time to LSU's 3 to include this years team.. But maybe this is a turning point Reply Back to Top |
quote: And that's the difference between being a "fan" of a sport rather than your school. I invested a lot in the university, 5 years + a lot of money. I care and want all LSU sports to succeed. They reflect our university. Reply Back to Top |
| weren't you bashing the hire recently and the team recently? aahhh, no, I did express worry that they were in a mid season lull, but also given it was first year coach etc., thought it would get better, knew team had two great pitchers and that they could win pretty big, but did not think they would get to cws... | Enjoyed watching them this weekend and have followed softball for years. Owning Louisiana and being able to attract talent like Fico could earn us a national championship before long. I loved Mack's intensity this weekend but she has been that way since she first came to LSU Reply Back to Top |
| It’s not just equality in scholarships – it’s equality in facilities, administrative treatment, funding, uniforms, and everything you can think of. LSU got nailed as huge violator of Title IX back in the Joe Dean era not just for inequality in scholarships, but for refusing to pay for the volleyball team to go to the NCAA tourney on anything but a shoestring budget while the basketball team could go to Hawaii and look at volcanoes with Dale Brown. By law, you have to pour money into women’s programs if you’re doing the same with men’s (READ: football). So, if we’re gonna pour money into the program to balance football spending, let’s at least win. As we spend more on football, we need powerful women’s programs that can justify the same level of funding as required by law. Softball’s also pretty exciting, easy to follow, and does not conflict with football season. I’d root for an LSU tiddlywinks team, though. The games this weekend were fun as hell to watch.
