re: Captain Americaquote: Well, that's how I feel. My bad. I can appreciate what the setup movies were (IM1, IM2, CA, Thor, even Hulk) and why they were necessary, but they weren't too good for me. Iron Man was solid (best of the bunch), IM2 fell off, Thor and CA were meh for me. I actually did like the Ed Norton Hulk movie...it was decent. I do give credit for Marvel for their obviously successful business plan with this though...they are being rewarded nicely. And FWIW, I fricking loved the Avengers. Thought it was great. quote: Exactly. And to me, knowing very little about X-Men or Wolverine (aside from what was in the first three movies), it was just a fun ride of a movie. I actually remember going into it expecting it to be just okay, and being pleasantly surprised...but I also wasn't watching it going "Man, they fricked up Gambit" or "Why would they do that to Deadpool" or whatever. I definitely think those people more ignorant to the comics would have enjoyed that movie more than those in the know. The reverse seems to be true for CA. Reply Back to Top |

quote: Yes and No. I think it has less to do with that they are looking for and more to do with what their disposition allows them to see. Look at Cocomo, who liked Avengers and not CA, when his expectations were probably similar. It goes along with the idea that adventure doesn't work well anymore. There's a certain understanding of adventure and naivete that gets lost in modern cultural art. CA wanders into that territory to a fault for some people. (FWIW John Carter has the same problem). I completely understand the hard to get "good two shoes," aspect of characters like Cap (Leonardo, Cyclops, Superman, etc.) few people like a morally centered and unwavering leader. I'd ALWAYS say that Cap was the best one of the classic do-good, boy scout leader types. But one quote from Thor sums it up: "I won't follow any mortal, but I will follow Steve Rogers." quote: I think we can sum up this meaningless debate over CA (of all movies) with "different strokes for different folks". I, like a couple others, greatly enjoyed The Avengers but CA just didn't "do it" for me. Reply Back to Top |

quote: I do think that people who read comics are used to seeing certain things and it doesn't bother them. Face it, some (definitely not all) comics can be cheesy. Cheesy is something comic fans are probably more willing to embrace than someone else. I really liked CA, but I also do enjoy cheesy superhero comics at times. quote: Oddly enough, before I started reading comics pretty heavy the past 3-4 years, I used to not like the goody two shoes type heroes. I still don't care for Superman, but I love CA now. As little as 2-3 weeks ago I disliked Cyclops, but I was reading a few comics with him and like him a bit more now. quote: fricking awesome. quote: I've always been a huge Cyclops fan but even I'll admit that current(last decade) Cyclops is 10x more interesting than the classic version. I would go so far as to not really classify him as one of the goody two shoes crew anymore. Reply Back to Top |
quote: I am reading Ultimate Spiderman right now, and I ended up reading Ultimatum, which I know a lot of people hate. I didn't think it was absolutely terrible, but it did make me like Cyclops more (even though I know the Ultimate universe is different than the regular one). I also read the X-men Schism comics that separated the x-men factions. Can't say I agreed with Cyclops, but it made me respect the character more. Reply Back to Top |
quote: Oh no I agree. Cap is cheesy and I loved it. That was the character from where he came from. quote: Exactly. And I agree, I still don't like Leo or Superman. I know, the Superman folks will come here and say the same thing I say about Caps, "he's more than that." I just can't get to that point, or get past his overall power. Cyclops is a different beast and has become a better character than most in Marvel's universe, even if his positions are unfavorable. quote: And that's why Caps is awesome. Reply Back to Top |
quote: Yeah his stance in Schism is definitely debatable but I love his decisiveness. He accepted his responsibility for the endangered mutant race without a second guess and he quit taking any and all shite. If you pose a potential or actual threat to his people, you're done. Hell, the fact alone that he organized the new version of Xforce shows how he's had to change since M-Day. No way that 1991 Cyclops organizes an X-kill crew to take out the baddies before they can hurt mutants. Reply Back to Top |
quote: I agree with that to an extent, but I also never read Spiderman and enjoyed the first two movies a ton. And I think we can all agree that that Spiderman franchise was over-the-top cheese. Reply Back to Top |
quote: True, but I think Spider-man is easily relatable to a bunch of people since he's not too goody-goody, he's a real guy when he isn't Spider-man, and the fact that he zips around the city can make for an entertaining movie. Also, he usually has pretty cool villains. quote: Uncanny X-Force? I love that. I started reading it a few months ago and couldn't stop. I do love Deadpool and Fantomex. Reply Back to Top |
quote: Yeah plus he was completely mainstream since before most of us were born. We got what we expected based on all the past Spiderman cartoons and live action shows. quote: Hell yeah. I don't get a whole lot of books anymore but X-Force isn't going anywhere as far as I'm concerned. The current series is unbelievable but you should check out the run right before this. It had Wolverine, Archangel, X-23, Warpath, Domino, and a few others. It was really good. Reply Back to Top |
quote:I'm coming from the same boat you are. I never read the first super hero comic book growing up and didn't know crap about them. But I think Wolverine while entertaining enough was pretty crappy. I'd rank it below all the pre Avengers movies and maybe about even with Green Lantern. I mistakenly made the assumption you would be thoroughly chastised. Reply Back to Top |
quote: Might do that. I recently downloaded all of Garth Ennis's run on Punisher. Supposed to be really good. I'm either gonna read that or just a random Batman next. Not sure which one. Reply Back to Top |
quote: His original run? They based the first movie off of parts of that run. Good stuff quote: I suggest Batman Incorporated. You get your dark and edgy Batman but its fun too. Reply Back to Top |
quote: The Black Mirror. Morrison's Batman and Robin. Those are great Batman stories starring Grayson as Batman. Reply Back to Top |
quote: The Punisher Max ones. I was looking at the art work online earlier and it looks amazing. Also, it looks like more of an actual real life story as opposed to superheroes in tights and all that. Which Punisher movie, War Zone or the Thomas Jane one? I actually think the Thomas Jane one wasn't bad. I loved War Zone. quote: I never did check that out. I always hear good things about Batman Noel. Reply Back to Top Refresh |
