re: 7 year old playing travel ball (coach pitch)UPDATE pg10
Posted by LSUBanker on 5/16 at 12:39 pm to Don Ready
I coached 7 year old allstar team last year. We got drilled! Some of these teams we played against were not truly allstars because these coaches like to stack the deck with elite players. My son was asked to play allstars again on the 8 year team, but he and I declined. He wants to enjoy his summer. I probably spent at least $1K out of pocket for 2 months of playing and traveling around south La last year.

My friend has two kids in travel ball and they were selling raffle tickets to "send the team to the world series in panama city." their fundraising goal is $26k

Once I found out they are selling to tickets to pay for the room, food and booze for the parents I vowed to never buy another raffle ticket from one of those kids again. And it's a shame cause I know some of them are probably alot more deserving.

Once Joey Cabaceras is finished with his travel team monstrousity complex in NOLA, I fear it will ruin playground ball for good. It makes parents feel their kids HAVE to play in those leagues or they'll be behind.

Probability of Playing College and Professional Baseball

quote:

Less than three in 50, or about 5.6 percent, of high school senior boys interscholastic baseball players will go on to play men's baseball at a NCAA member institution.

quote:

Less than eleven in 100, or about 10.5 percent, of NCAA senior male baseball players will get drafted by a Major League Baseball (MLB) team.

Approximately one in 200, or approximately 0.5 percent of high school senior boys playing interscholastic baseball will eventually be drafted by an MLB team.

Yeah but you've got to figure those numbers are higher for kids who were in truly elite programs as a 7 year old.

I guess the team haa a paid coach as well?

I have coached travel softball for 10 years and surely dont get paid....we started when girls were 6-7. Almost all of these girls will be getting some sort of softball scholarship to college. A couple will be going to d-1 schools others will go to smaller schools....this is why we did this....strickly for them. We did not play every weekend. Now parents do pay for hotels...although some bring mobile homes....our team fee this year was 200 per
girl...we are highly successful winning numerous tournaments all over the south. People can argue about this but all i know is that all my girls will be going to college at some level thanks to travel ball

damn .. i remember playing american legion D league back in the day and we were pitching to each other at 7 or 8 years old .. it was pretty crappy pitching .. but it was no worse than some dad on the mound lobbing the ball over the plate to create the illusion that little justin is the next don mattingly ... all this coaches pitch and machine pitch shite are just money makers ... find a way for him to play and hit against live pitching ASAP ..

As a coach and dad, I can honestly say that I agree that 7 is too young to travel. You can play a few local tourneys if you want to see if he likes it. Most travel teams are always in need of a sub player or two - especially in the summer.

My advice is to make sure he is at least playing in a league and that you are working with him at home. Just play catch with him. Also, get a pack of plastic practice golf balls and pitch those to him in the yard once or twice a week. He'll be fine. Believe me, those maniacs that coach those year round teams are always looking for sound players. He'll get his chance. Don't steal his childhood to play in worthless tournaments at this age.

and stuff like this is a shame too .. i agree with what you are saying .. this illusion that parents get that their kid is going to be left behind and fall out of line if they aren't playing travel tee ball at three years old is amazing .. i feel for the parents and the kids ... if a kid is genuinely interested in baseball and has the natural talent to play the sport .. he can jump on the train any time he wants and fit in ...

The kid is 7 years old. No reason to go balls deep with the dedication yet. Travel teams are big money for elite players. IMHO doing things at the age of 7 or so may just be overkill and push the kid away.

And with the percentages talk of who goes pro and/or college is moot.

You know who the elite players are in any sport way before there any senior years or time for statistics to be made.

This. Travel ball can't be enjoyable for the kid or the parent past week 3 or 4. I could understand playing a couple of tournaments over the summer, but every weekend?

nah, not going to happen. Just in the Carrollton League there are 18 teams in 7-8's, 220 kids. Out of those kids there are 3 travel ball teams with 12 kids on each team..1 for the 7's and 2 for the 8's. I only see a couple of kids per team that are good enough to play travel...and then each team has 2-3 kids that have no clue what the hell they're doing and the rest are just mediocre at best.
Then you still have the NORD league, but I have no clue what their numbers are. I know they are pretty good kids that play over there but they cant afford travel or CB

This. And most of the guys who will play college baseball don't have time to play year around ball in middle school and high school because they are also playing football, basketball, etc.

you guys are so much better organized down there in NOLA than they are up here in BR .. you basically have the YMCA .. American Legion (which is partnered with the YMCA) .. Istrouma Baptist .. and travel ball up here ... the BREC leagues suck ..

I have been very impressed with Carrollton Boosters...they defiantly have there flaws but all in all the facilities at the Fly are top notch and the leadership and the way it's ran isnt bad either. It's gotta be tough orgainzing all the sports they have to offer with as many kids as they have.

Check out their websiite.

I've got a better idea.
Keep your kid at home. But make sure you scream at him loudly for whatever error he makes around the house.make him stand out in your backyard for three straight hours, and yell again at him for not being focused and committed, if he wants to move around.
And on Friday afternoons drive around and throw $100 , or the equivalent of two nights stay in a motel, out your car window.
Then drive back home and enjoy the rest of your weekends together.

Don't do it. You run the risk of him getting burned out on it, and tee-ball through coach pitch isn't really that beneficial in the broad scheme in regard to his "skill level." If that's what you're worried about, just take him to the field a few times a week so he can get in more reps. Save yourself some $ while you're at it.

he would be dealing with burn out

this happens. when I was younger, I played year round. fall ball, winter, wood bat league, summer, travel ball, school, multiple teams during each season, played up an age group. It takes a toll. I never got to do other things I love(hunting, playing music) my shoulders are fricked and I lost interest. it's expensive and mega time consuming.

all that being said, I had a lot of fun too.
