| The Long Hot Summer Posted by blueboy I watched it again last night. I have to say, although Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward are two of my favorite actors (Newman is in my top 5), Orson Welles makes them both look like amateurs in this film. They're acting. He really is that character. Brilliant.Reply Back to Top |
| Brilliant performance by Mr. Welles. Reply Back to Top |
| that is a great movie Reply Back to Top |
| When they had the BR premier, The Dekes had a "Joanne Woodward slept here" sign on their house. Reply Back to Top |
| What's funny is I've never seen the movie but years ago on TV late night watched the 3-hour TV-movie version with Don Johnson, Jason Robards and Cybill Shepherd...it was pretty good for a TV movie - sort of lazily sucks you into that soap opera. One of these days I have to watch the original. Reply Back to Top |
quote: Didn't know this version existed and now that I do, I am saddened. I love Robards, but seriously, dude. Why dontcha remake Casablanca while you're at it? shite. Maybe I shouldn't have said that. They might just do it. Reply Back to Top |
| It is an excellent film. Newman is one of my favorites. You spoke highly of Orson...he is great, but did not upstage Newman. Must disagree. And Orson's fake nose was extremely distracting. I hate to say, but it almost ruins the film for me. Reply Back to Top |

| A majority of the film was filmed in Clinton. The little 'store' is still right there in the courtyard square in Clinton...the building remains, but its vacant now. Interesting note: Joanne & Paul got married that year of filming, during the weekends, they week to New Orleans to relax from filming. Joanne loved antiques so all they did was shop in N.O. They purchased a huge wooden 'brothel' bed from the late 1800's, they said it was the size of two kings. Well, they used that bed for over 50 years and they still used it when Paul died in 08'. I always thought that was pretty neat. Reply Back to Top |
| Welles was great in just about everything he did. His acclaim is for directing but his acting & narrating were always top notch. The man just had a presence about him, and that voice. Speaking of directors Martin Ritt and Newman did some great work together. To think this is only the third best film they did together. Reply Back to Top |
quote: Agree, Hud is one of my all time fave, i really liked Hombre too... I wish Newman would've done more 'westerns'. And speaking of Paul & Joanne, my ole' lady loves "From the Terrace". Reply Back to Top |
quote: That one has been in my queue forever I've been meaning to watch it. I'm also a fan of Mark Robson's movies. Reply Back to Top |
quote: I'm not very familiar with his work. Looking him up now...what do u suggest 'constant cough'? Reply Back to Top |
| Champion or another good boxing one he did with Bogart, The Harder They Fall. Your wife would probably like Peyton Place. Several other posters here have raved about Von Ryan's Express though I have yet to see it myself. Couple of interesting early horror movies he did The Seventh Victim & Bedlam. Edge of Doom were Farley Granger kills a priest. The Prize another movie he did with Newman put not as good as the others, Cold War thriller. | Thanks Constant. I will check them out. Reply Back to Top |
| One of my favorite movies. I had heard that Orson Welles hated the whole production because he was hot and hated the nose. This did not affect his performance, obviously, because he was stellar. Lee Remick was hot as fire. The Don Johnson thing is an abomination. An abomination, I say. Reply Back to Top Refresh |
