Tesla

As a side note, I know this isn't really political in nature but I thought y'all might enjoy it more than the OT

Awesome read.

Edison sounds a little like Steve Jobs, actually.

I recall History Channel (back when it actually showed such things, instead of fricking reality shows) had a great program about him. Amazing fellow (and, yes, Edison was pretty much of a douche).

Without Edison or Westinghouse, Tesla would have probably starved to death. Through out history the successful technical genuis is usually paired with someone that knows how to turn their ideas into money, Hewlett and Packard, Jobs and Wozniak, Allen, and Gates.

There is a tiny mistake in the first little section. Ac current isn't a world wide standard as DC is used in some nations, France for one in fact. The bad thing about that is if you get into the circuit, you are toast.

France is 220 volts AC same as the rest of Europe, the other difference in Europe besides the higher voltage is they use a 50HZ line frequency instead of the U.S. 60HZ standard. AC power distrbution was actuaaly first developed in France. Currently the only thing DC is used for in the entire world is for extreme long distance power transmission, there are only three of these lines in use in the U.S.

False. He was a great thinker and businessman but was a complete tool and doesn't deserve half of the credit Tesla does. When it comes to electricity, if Edison gets all the credit that he currently does, Tesla should be renamed Thor.

Fun Fact: Edison didn't only shock small animals to "prove" AC was bad.

100% TOOL

Ahhh... The good old days when you could steal and electrocute peoples pets and electrocute elephants and no one would say boo about it.

'

Also it makes some claims which I'm pretty sure aren't true, like that Tesla invented neon lights.

From the Drunk History series: LINK.

"Alternating current is bad. Alternating current will only cause massive death. ... Look what happens when the sheep touches alternating current. It gets electrocuted. Look what happens when a cow comes in contact with alternating current. It dies." -- Thomas Edison

Good read, thanks.

ETA: highly unlikely that any nations use DC to transmit power on a large scale. AC allows for the use of transformers to easily step voltages up and down. The higher the voltage the less your power losses (or voltage drop). To transmit DC for a long distance at a usable voltage would take giant cables, which is far more expensive than a transformer on each end with a small wire between.

I would think most here would like Edison over Tesla as there are so many financial/management geniuses - as opposed to actual doers-of-things.

"Actual doer's of things" are despised by liberals. As soon as they are successful they want to take their money.

Ah yes, and conservatives are all redneck, bible-thumping, uneducated homophobes, right?
