| Celebrity Suicides, does media make it (suicide) seem popular? Posted by tduecen Watching Seau stuff on ESPN and wondering if media makes this look "cool" to avg kid? That they will get this kind of attention, (maybe attention they are seeking?) by doing something like this. Wouldn't it be better to promote that suicide isn't the answer? Reply Back to Top |
| You think the media gives two shits about people? Dead teens makes for good headlines. Good headlines sell papers/ get viewers. Viewers get ads, money is made, and the world marches on. Reply Back to Top |
| Unfortunate as it seems, I think that's a great point. The revenue a media company stands to generate certainly won't turn them off to the idea of reporting about it. Also, it works in proportion the more famous a person is/was, the more they will be reported on. Take Kurt Cobain versus the girl who jumped the MRB the other night, hell was that even on the news? | I don't get how you think the media is promoting suicide. Seau was a very well-respected guy. If anything, the McNair saga got more play. Was this promoting crazy chick, double homicides? Reply Back to Top |
| Suicide seems like one of the few things left that still seems a bit taboo to discuss publicly. There's always that "easy way out, he/she was selfish" crowd that honestly just doesn't need to be heard from. Everything else could seem like it is "endorsing" it in a way, I suppose. Basically, you can't condemn or condone it without causing even more pain to those left behind by the deceased, so it seems as though it is best left alone. Reply Back to Top |
quote:Maybe sensationalize it, make it seem (especially with Celebs)... as much as we say peer pressure doesn't alter people's mindset it does. I know there has been topics on this board where people openly discussed issues they were having with depression, suicidal l thoughts, etc Even though part of the crowd mocks them at least they are reaching out for help even when they may not know the people on the other side. Why because sometimes it is easier to talk to a stranger about issues than someone you are close with. Reply Back to Top |
| The "media" doesn't give the public what they don't want any more than McDonalds sell the fat guy the Big Mac he doesn't want. There is a need for constant coverage for this BS in our society, they meet the need and profit from it. Reply Back to Top |
quote: I don't see it. Do you want them to withhold cause of death? If anything, the suicide aspect of Seau's death is being downplayed due to the assumption there was brain damage. This post was edited on 5/12 at 7:36 am Reply Back to Top |
This is a very good question. quote: I personally think this should be the message. Reply Back to Top Refresh |
