| If NFL only suspn'd Vilma 4-6 games and Smith/Fujita/Hargrove 1-2 games,.... Posted by STEVED00 Would this whole bounty gate thing have just gone away?? Seems to me if Goodell would've have given minimal suspensions to Smith/Fujita/Hargrove (1-2 games) and a moderate suspension to Vilma (4-6 games) then this whole drama wouldve drifted off into the sunset. Anyone else think this?? IMO, Goodell went full dictator and decided to lower the boom w/ what appears to be very little back up assuming media wouldn't question bc they hadn't really questioned the coaches suspensions. | I think so. But Goodell had to show everyone how badass he is and gave vilma a ridiculous suspension Reply Back to Top |
| I don't know what Goodell thought the media would do in regards to questioning him about the evidence or lack thereof, but his behavior since the NFL itself broke bounty gate indicates Goodell wants this story in the news. Reply Back to Top |
| No. If the Saints would have stopped when they were warned, none of this would have happened. So in a word: no. Reply Back to Top |
| definite backfire. i hope the arse hole gets 10x more serious backlash than what has started already Reply Back to Top |
| I want an owner to step in and put pressure on Goodell. Reply Back to Top |
| this whole thing could get cleared up if the evidence is as clear as Goodell says it is and apparently it isn't otherwise he would show the evidence Reply Back to Top |

| this whole thing could get cleared up if the evidence is as clear as Goodell says it is and apparently it isn't otherwise he would show the evidence --------- starting to wonder if the evidence is player(s) testimony and they are trying to protect those player(s) or personnel that told the 'truth'. Kind of like a drug bust where they say hey we are only looking at getting the big guy, you can make your life a lot easier by just telling us what we need to know and maybe we can forget about this incident. My guess is there wasn't some black book with a hit list in it documenting every incident, but simply a list of players who came forward and said yeah it happened and this is how it went down. quote: Not really. He is doing this for them. Don't sue the NFL or hold it liable, it takes player safety seriously. I guess I could see a scenario where an owner or 2 tells Goodell "hey listen you made your point, this no longer has anything left for us to gain except for ego about not getting contradicted." If it gets to a point though where someone impartial will decide if Goodell has authority to decide this alone, owners will all back him up. He works for them, and they don't one someone not under their control with authority Reply Back to Top |
| I could see it easing away If he would have chilled with player punishments. At this point godell doesn't cease to amaze me. He reminds me of the power hungry cop who more than likely got picked on in highschool.. Reply Back to Top |
| He wanted to make a statement. That's what he did. Time to move on. Reply Back to Top |

quote: Who do you think Goodell is working for? Hell, even Tom Benson is completely silent on this bull$hit. He should be raising all kinds of hell. Reply Back to Top |
quote: But when you start taking away a person in a bargaining unit's paycheck then you better expect that that person will ask to see the evidence against him. Vilma is currently out of millions of $$. Goodell had the media and fans (other than Saints fans) on HIS side after the coach suspensions, mainly bc the coaches couldn't really do anything about it. If he just would have gone easy on the players (and I think justifiably he could by saying they were just doing as they were told by big bad Greg Williams). Coming down hard on the players guaranteed the NFLPA would get involved and demand to see data that justified the suspensions. Reply Back to Top |
quote: Nobody balked at the coach suspensions! Heavy coach suspensions and light player suspensionsis would have been justifiable bc the players' jobs were at stake and they were just doing as they were told. Plus the actual evidence does not show anything out of the ordinary actually occurred on the field which backs up the claim that it was mainly talk. Reply Back to Top |
quote: That's like saying Stern vetoed the Hornets/Lakers trade thinking the media would ignore it. There's a union with a relatively new leader looking to make his mark. Goodell knew there'd be blow back, but his job is to make the tough decisions and take the heat for the owners. The louder and longer the players scream in outrage at his "over reaching" the more likely Goodell gets what he wants, a public squashing of the NFL's "bounty culture". The players can be outraged and call him a dictator all they want, they are stuck with him for 10 more years, and if they want to reduce his power during the next CBA negotiations, it will probably cost them money, something that will please his owners. The Saints players may get reduced penalties on a technicality that forces someone else to decide punishment for 2009, but Goodell is getting exactly what he wants out of this. Yeah he'd like it to be quieter, but everything has a cost. Hopefully no one takes my post as defending Goodell, I just don't think this is personal like many do and I think he's completely in control and getting what he wants in the big picture even though it might look like things are starting to unravel on him in the smaller picture. quote: Very good post that makes some valid points but I would disagree with one thing. I do think it's a little personal on Goodell's part. Maybe not against the Saints or their fans in general but certainly at Payton and the front office. I don't doubt that they crossed a line somewhere and deserved punishment but the severity of the punishment really comes off like a "don't you know who I am?" kind of move. That said, his main intention here is to play CYOA for the impending lawsuits. This post was edited on 5/10 at 9:15 am Reply Back to Top |
