re: OK, time for another pit bull + blacks thread

Maybe it is the owners though. A bunch of lower income blacks owning pits could probably skew the stats right?

There was a horrific mauling by a pit bull a couple of days ago in Hammond. Owners where two white gals...child was black. Literally chewed her leg off.

My stepdaughter and her boyfriend have a pit bull; the thing looks at me with that 'could go rogue' look on it's face. I've told them about the problematic aspects of pb's; they are oblivious.

Wish me luck.

My friend is black. He is more of a fan of Drake and Lil'Wayne. I argued with him for a bit, but then Pitbull went and sold out hardcore. Now he's in every commercial it seems.

Here is a picture of him:

The Hammond paper is buzzing; a lot of the older folk who walk the streets are scared. They are talking permits, just to own a pb. Which I would not be opposed to. Hell, owing one of the things - the Dog Whisperer viewpoint nws - will always be a roll of the dice, because the animal is EQUIPPED with capabilities that most aren't. Like driving down I-12 at 90, with the tread showing on the front tire. Might blow, might not. But if it does...somebody will be hurt.

I'm white and this is my buddy. I never planned on owning a Pit Bull, I was supposed to be baby sitting him for awhile until my son could build a fence strong enough to hold him inside. That was about 5 years ago and he is still here with me.
It is not "totally" all in how they are raised. They are aggressive dogs, while at the same time very sweet with great personality. Mine is very friendly towards people. However he is a bully towards other dogs. He wants to attack every dog that he sees. Not sociable at all towards other dogs. I also have a 1 year old grand daughter that I will not let him go near her. I'm just not going to take that chance.
I love him. He is like my own son. Very loyal and very smart and protective of my home and family. But he will definitely be the last Pit Bull that I ever own, because the risk is so high of something going wrong.

This echoes my experience as well. The dogs with good owners are loyal and gentle in general with humans, but are definitely bred with the purpose, and act instinctively so, of attacking other dogs. Bad owners can amplify this aggression to include humans in general. And as the case with any aggressive dog...children, particularly small children, can easily trigger the "prey" instinct.

I was with friends in Shreveport. They had a pit bull named Buster. Another couple was there, friends that had been to the house many times over. Their son, probably around age 9-10, was there too.

Buster was on the sofa, in the middle, with one person sitting on each end of the sofa. One of those was the kid. We were all laughing, talking, listening to music and having drinks, No problems. Nobody touching or messing with Buster. Suddenly, out of nowhere, and with no provocation, Buster jumped up and onto the kid and started biting his face... ferociously. I was just a few feet away when this occurred, and I kicked the dog in the chest/shoulders as quickly as I could to get it off the kid. The owner rushed to grab the dog and the dog bit him on the arm as it tried to return to go after the kid.

It was a very surreal moment. The kid had major gashes in his face and head when he was taken to the emergency room. At least his parents were smart enough to get on the phone and contact a plastic surgeon friend to come in to fix the kid's face properly instead of letting some 1st year resident mess him up. The police came with animal control and took Buster the next day, and the dog was eventually put down and my friend ended up getting sued by the kid's parents. That experience was enough for me. There is something dark and disturbed in those animals.

The people that attempt to justify pit bulls are often misunderstood and tormented souls themselves.

Says Katherine Houpt, director of the Animal Behavior Clinic at Cornell and author of Domestic Animal Behavior: "Different breeds have genetic predispositions to certain kinds of behavior, though that can be influenced by how they are raised. The pit bull is an innately aggressive breed, often owned by someone who wants an aggressive dog, so they're going to encourage it."

The fact is, because the incedents of attack are so much higher with pit bulls, any person who decides to own one should be kept to the strictest standards of keeping it locked away. Especially in a neighborhood where children are present. I can only imagine the rage i would feel if someone's "misunderstood pet" attacked my child.

You know, there is a very good nature vs. nurture discussion to be had here, on several different levels.
Pitbulls have been bred for their aggressive nature and ferocity. This is innate in their blood. Now, can it be tempered? Certainly. Can it be erased? Never. It always lurks just below the surface, and the right trigger can undo a lifetime of training. One cannot eliminate instinct, one can only place a veneer on top of it and hope it stays true.

Stainless steel is made by the addition of chromium to steel, in simple terms. It creates a coating of Chromium oxide on the surface that is resistant to corrosion and doesn't rust. Yet, of you disturb this outer layer enough, ferric oxide will form and spread.
Much like, if the surface formed through nurturing is disturbed, the raw force of nature will take over.

very aggressive breed and more prone to snap than any other breed. Something about a piece of cartilage swelling between their eyes causing psychotic rage.

Very tempermental, protective, one person/family breed. Will bits but can't inflict anywhere near the damage as a Chow or Pitbull.

Plus akitas. They just have that look.

Others are huskies, Dobermans, and malamutes. If I see them on my property, they're getting a load of ratshot.

Another weird psycho breed is Hungarian Viselas. I worked with a farmer who had 3 of them, and treated them like his kids. I'd been around them for about a year and they seemed like well behaved dogs. One night all three of them attacked and backed me into a corner when the farmer left us alone to get a checkbook in the other room. Eventually he had to put all three down because they kept attacking people.

I've had great luck with Australian Shepards, but the best possible breed is a Lab mongrel found in cardboard boxes near a Walmart entrance marked "Free Puppies."

you lost me right there.
Sure they look like fricking razor wire on legs but they are very smart and selective attackers.
Will pretty much only attack if provoked or commanded much like a German Shepard.
You're just scared of the way they look, but that's ok,that's what they're bred for.

No. My father-in-law had two that went after my 2 y/o son. I wonder what would have happened if I hadn't been right next to him.

I can remember when dog fighting was legal in Louisiana. It was huge in West Carroll, in particular. A lot of the bloodlines of those fighting pits are still around in N La. and they are some crazy violent dogs. The handful of sweetnatured pits I've seen don't come close to balancing out the hundreds that I've seen that desparately need a bullet in the head.

I've also noticed that its generally short guys that want a yard full of pits. I'm not freakishly tall at all, 6'2-6'3, but I've had a number of pits freak the frick out when they see me standing beside their owner.

Just because our experiences with a dog don't match up does't mean that they weren't bred for certain things.
I had a wonderful doberman as a boy and she was as sweet as pie, but that doesn't mean her breed doesn't have the propensity for violence.

I'm going to need some sort of evidence to this statement.
I've never owned a Doberman nor have ever known anybody that has but I can't believe the breed has a propensity to be violent.

Not to the degree of Pitbulls and Rottweilers, but there is a reason that Dobermans have been cast as watchdogs in the media
