Posted by BrerTiger quote: quote: quote: LINK What Politico doesn't tell you is that in 2008, Catholics voted for Obama by about a 54-44 margin, compared to 52-46 for Obama for all voters. In 2004, Bush won the Catholic vote by a 52-47 margin. Gore won the Catholic vote in 2000 by a 50-47 margin. So Obama's share of the Catholic vote in 2008 was larger than Bush's or Gore's. LINK Interesting... ETA: Link to the actual Gallup poll results: LINK quote: quote: This post was edited on 5/2 at 3:56 pm Reply Back to Top |
| As a dedicated practicing Catholic, I do not support either. I truly hate seeing "Catholics" voting for Obama though. Reply Back to Top |
quote: quote: I'll bite. This does not compute (for me, anyway). You say you don't support either. Yet you don't hate to see Catholics vote for Romney while you do hate to see Catholics vote for Obama. Do you say this strictly based on Obama's views/policies on contraception and abortion? | I see where several Catholic leaders have rejected the Ryan plan as counter to the church's teachings. I'm curious to what catholic tiger thinks of this development. Reply Back to Top |
quote: why financial regulation and wealth redistribution aren't as big of a deal to Catholics as abortion or contraception. or how a guy whose health care plan that pays for abortion and contraception can be better than the other guys. Reply Back to Top |
quote: Not a lock, but definitely a good argument can be made. But, if you want to talk strictly demographics where the GOP needs help, you also have to consider the female problem. Per Gallup (most recent data I could find), Obama beats Romney 52-40 for the female vote. quote: LINK This is how we ended up with Sarah Palin in 2008. 2012's Latina version of Sarah Palin??? Honestly, I don't know of another potential Latina VP nomineee in the GOP other than Susana Martinez. But she is a very popular governor... This post was edited on 5/2 at 4:39 pm Reply Back to Top |

| if you look again at the data in the OP you get that white people are voting for Romney and Hispanics are voting for Obama. Then, you just add that they are Catholic. If Romney uses an Hispanic VP, he wins. edited to acknowledge that Obama is not doing as well with Catholics this time around as last time. This post was edited on 5/2 at 5:06 pm Reply Back to Top |
quote: But the thing is, he would need a Mexican, not a Cuban, to really solidify any sort of real advantage with the Hispanics. Is there even a qualified Mexican-American person (you know what I mean) to be the Veep? Reply Back to Top |
quote: Interesting. And I doubt the Hispanic community will fall for such a shallow gesture. Especially after the GOP debates where the issue was who would build the most deadly fence. Reply Back to Top |
quote: People need to realize that Americans in general are not smart, or at least not in tune to pandering. Just like some republican blacks who voted for obama because they thought it was time for a black president, I think you would have it with a Hispanic VP candidate with Romney. It would definitely happen with a Mexican American VP candidate. You'll still have some with Rubio, but I just don't think it would even be close to as much. A lot of Mexicans HATE Cubans.
