Reminds me of this article last week from Chuck Klosterman:

LINK

Lots of people apparently like Applebees. For lots of other people, Applebee's is the best "night out" they can afford. I don't begrudge them that, if it makes them happy.

I agree with this statement as long as it doesn't lead to others being complacent, satisfied with mediocrity and afraid to take risks, try new things and improve or expand their options.

I figured this one out while traveling for work. Most towns don't have good restaurants and Applebees like it or not is the best place they have

Applebees is the "neighborhood bar" in many smallish towns/exurbs.

Theres a 10 page thread on Canes yet this board still wants to act pretentious.

Who cares what people eat? Eat what you like

Here is a little secret that we don't know in South Louisiana because of our relative lack of "middle of nowhere" towns. If you go to bodunk, ky or backside, iowa (say, on business, which used to send me to such places) the only decent place within 100 miles to get a decent drink (decent used liberally of course) would be the closest Applebee's. And so, while having a drink, you would have a little something to eat. Preferably something simple that even Applebee's can't frick up.

I guess what I am saying, is besides the crazy minions that would go to an Applebee's in a place like the NO area. (WHY!?!) There are enough Applebee's spread out throughout the barely inhabited reaches of America, that a drink and the equivalent of bar food from there can be your only choice.

I have had zero food a a chain that is inedible or made me sick.

Traveling a bit, I have had some inedible food on more than one occasion and food poisoning another, from local eateries. Chains serve a purpose.

I have been in a lot of small towns, especially in the South and Eastern seaboard, where Applebee's would be best food in town. Get off the Interstate in small town Alabama or Georgia and look for hidden treasures, you will pray for an Applebee's or a Schlotsky's, my food snobbery about chains took a 180.

We are spoiled because there is no excuse for anyone with any taste at all to eat in a chain here. When I hear some people wetting their pants over Panera Bread coming to BR, it cracks me up.

My sister goes to school in a town of 20,000 with The nearest real city 45 minutes away.

Applebees is literally the nicest restaurant in town that is not fast food.

Place is packed no matter what time I've been in there.
