| Construction question Posted by JBM210 on 4/29 at 5:45 pm Didn't want to put this on the OT lounge board because I wanted serious answers. Trying to source out someone to biuld me and the wife an extension onto our existing patio. Had 3 seperate guys come out an take measurements and notes. One off of craigslist, one referred to from a neighbor a few houses down, and one through Home Depot. After 3 weeks, nothing. They were supposed to have me estimates back in a week. None of the 3 are even returning my calls. Anybody out there have anyone they would recommend? If these 3 clowns want even return my calls, they surely can't be depended on to complete the job they way we request and on time. It's not like it's a $300 job. What we want is probably close to 10K. Thanks!Reply Back to Top |

quote: or they see working up a bid is a waste of time. Not sure how you presented the project for them, but there are a number of red flags that contractors look for when sizing up an opportunity. (of course they could all be unreliable as well). Some of the flags include... - not sure if you really know what you want. Many times on a remodel, an owner will ask for a fixed price bid, but will want to design on the fly. - owner saying they "don't want to spend a lot of money". No one does, but a better way to state this is "here are our goals, here is our budget". - unknowns. Again this is like point 1, but may have more to do with possible issues once the project starts that will eat up the budget. Rot, foundation issues, code issues, etc. Now, a respectable contractor wouldn't simply not call you back, they'd state these things during your discussion, and hopefully tell you the job really isn't for them...but in a lot of cases, respectable contractor is an oxymoron. One thing you might do is call the local homebuilders association and ask for their list of members who are on their remodeler council, or are dedicated remodelers (you don't necessarily want a starving new home builder doing remodeling work). quote: My god. Don't use Home Depot and don't use some random person out of the phone book. Ask around. Get recommendations. Make sure you get references if it's someone you're not sure about. There are plenty of general contractors out there looking for work that shouldn't be hard to find. I could recommend a framer and other contractors from when I built my house in 2010. I didn't use a general contractor though as I did that. Reply Back to Top |

| We had a pic that the wife had found. She wants almost an exact duplicate. A budget was never discussed. It's a matter of pouring a slab, connecting the new patio cover to our existing roof adding posts and ceiling fans. Not something that exotic Reply Back to Top |
| Probably are going to need a set of plans. If you can sketch it out yourself, maybe a draftsman can draw up the plans. Or, look into hiring an architect. Good plans can save you alot of headaches and problems down the road. Reply Back to Top |
| Don't go with Home Depot and you don't need to hire an architect to design it... Where are you located? Reply Back to Top |
Posted by JBM210 on 5/1 at 8:50 pm to DuckSlayer22 Located in Prairieville. Had one of the original 3 backed out do to not being able to get a crew together(this is the one through Home Depot). One emailed me back with a list of all the materials and labor but no money figure. And I left another voice mail to the 3rd guy asking him to call me back even if he wasn't interested. That was Monday morning. Wayne Dodge did come to the house today and met with my wife. We shall see.Reply Back to Top |
| Post a picture of what you want, someone here might be able to help... Reply Back to Top |
| try angies list. I've heard several good experiences from getting contractors from that site. Reply Back to Top |
quote: Solid post. First things I thought of. If three contractors aren't following through then something may be scaring them off. quote: This also. Reply Back to Top |
| How much clearer can I be if I have an exact picture from several different angles? And the backside of the house in the pic is almost anexact duplicate of ours. I will try Angie's list as well. Thanks. Reply Back to Top |
