| Screw all of you guys. Get off of your high horses. First off, this is Louisiana State University. I could give a crap less about students from Texas. LSU should be worried about providing quality education to the students in this state. I was a student during Emmerts "Master Plan" years. He succeeded in getting rid of all the instructors that were there to teach college and replaced them with PHDs who were there to make money. I can promise you that the quality of my degree decreased during my time there directly because of this. Now the University is feeling the pinch because of the inflated PHD salaries they are paying. The solution? Raise Tuition, increase class size, and continue to pass the cost on to the students to allow LSU to maintain its status. Some of my best professors there were instructors who were there because they wanted to be college professors. They put the time and effort into teaching. LSU's goal, as an institution of higher learning, should be to educate its students. Don't give me that crap about I have more opportunity because my class is taught by some PHD who sends TAs to do his lectures with 300 students rather than an instructor who's only goal is to teach students at a quarter of the price. I am not naieve enough to say we don't need research depts, and there are some classes that should be taught by PHDs. But if you think that this university is concerned with student education over status and money, you are severely delusional. Reply Back to Top |
| Lomardi was a complete a-hole on a power trip. Did the idiot not realize that MOST of the students who drive the BMW's and Range Rover's in the commuter lots have TEXAS license plates rather than Louisiana?? I went to an upper middle class Catholic school in Nola and 95% of the girls I knew who go to LSU don't drive luxury vehicles. Most of them drive used Toyota's, Honda's, Hyundai's, etc. My dad also said Lombardi wanted to bring back the Stelly Tax and basically double the income taxes...ridiculous. Lombardi also fired anyone who wasn't a yes man or who didn't kiss his ass, i.e. O'Keefe and Tim Ryan at UNO. I'm glad this bastard is gone. Good move by the state to get rid of him. He was jeopardizing LSU. I also have to agree that my big beef is that LSU has too many PhD professors who are lazy asses and could care less about teaching (and thus have their Asian grad students teach classes who fricking SUCK). I've had much better instructors (note, AMERICAN instructors) than some of these PhD a-holes with tenure who complain about academia yet make 6 figures a year. Go figure. Maybe they should've either just gone into strictly research or not be at a university... This post was edited on 4/27 at 7:13 pm Reply Back to Top |

quote: THIS!!!! Lombardi bucked Jindal and Jindal's whores canned him. I am one of those Ph.D.s you talk about although I teach with another university. Yes, Ph.D.s do research. They are under a lot of pressure to publish and attract grants. Graduate students normally teach lower level courses in many cases. Ph.D.s teach upper level undergraduate courses as well as graduate level work. That's what Ph.D.s do and that's how universities work. I am sure you can cut a lot, and you can cut to the extent that at some point your regional accreditation gets endangered. At some point if "Fuhrer Bobby" keeps doing his thing, that may well happen. No, I didn't agree with everything Lombardi said, but he did a lot more good than harm for LSU. The guy's heart was in his job. However, Jindal couldn't get his pecker in his pocket or get him to drink the kool-aid. You want something to bitch at, bitch at Jindal. That lying little shite is going to ruin this state and is well on his way to doing just that. Reply Back to Top |
| Of course Lombardi wanted to bring back the Stelly Tax, LSU improved by leaps and bounds when it was implemented. It was a small tax designed to help higher education. How has LSU faired when it was repealed in 2008? Lost hundreds of faculty to greener pastures, reduction of staff in nearly every discipline, the cutting of several departments. Reply Back to Top |

quote: LSU needs to provide the best education possible to the best students that it can attract. If that means pushing hard in Dallas and Houston, then that's what it needs to do. Lombardi was the only LSU higher up I ever had any personal contact with (I took his History of College Sport class) and I was always impressed. I don't know much about him other than what I gleaned from that class, but I always thought he had LSU's best interest first and foremost. I don't know what majors a lot of you folks had, but I was never taught by a TA. I had classes with good teachers and terrible teachers, but I never got this impression that the PhD's just didn't want to be there. Reply Back to Top |
| well he let UNO leave the LSU system and their future looks 10x brighter... Reply Back to Top |
| Yeah but Louisiana also had one of the highest (top 10) state income tax levels in the US during that time period...We already pay enough taxes out of the arse as it is. Reply Back to Top |
quote: sez who? if the people of the state want to budget for it, it can be free. if the alumni give and create a trustfund, it can be free. If thru a combination of state and alum and taking into account differences in parents income, it can be free for most people. See. it can be free. I know that Stanford is expensive. But UNC is free. UNC alumni made it free with a trustfund. This post was edited on 4/29 at 6:21 pm Reply Back to Top |

quote: Are you serious? Where do these magical state funds come from? Your entire premise that quality education can be free is liberal bull shite that fails to acknowledge where this free money comes from... Reply Back to Top |
