| Any new rules in football this year? Was LSU only one to get celebration call? Posted by secman12 Just curious if there are any rules changes for 2012. Also, sure it was discussed on this Board previously, but were we the only ones to get called for celebration penalty and lose TD last year? Thanks Reply Back to Top |
| Kickoffs have been moved to the 35. I believe touchbacks have been moved to the 25, but not sure. Reply Back to Top |

| The NCAA Rules Committee approved the following rule changes for the 2012 season (mainly for safety reasons): -Kickoffs will be moved up to the 35 yard line from the 30, mirroring a similar change by the NFL in the 2011 season and rescinding a rule change made in the 2007 season. -The kicking team will only have a five yard running head start on kickoffs, again mirroring the NFL changes in 2011. -Touchbacks will move from the 20 yard line to the 25 yard line only on kickoffs and free kicks after a safety. Touchbacks on punts rolling into the end zone or fumbles into the end zone will remain at the 20-yard line. -Players will be forbidden to leap over other players when blocking punts. -Players who lose their helmets during a play (except when caused by fouls such as grabbing the facemask) will have to leave the field for one play. -Offensive players in the tackle box at the snap who are not in motion are allowed to block below the waist legally without restriction. All other players are restricted from blocking below the waist with some exceptions (i.e. blocking straight-on), modifying a rule change from the 2011 season. Reply Back to Top |

quote: I guess this is to off-set the increasing number of kickoffs that will be touchbacks. Since the kickoffs are moving up to the 35, you will see less returns, so I guess they threw the return teams a bone on this one. Reply Back to Top |
quote:That was my initial thought too, but thinking about it - there's a helmet on the field after almost every play now. Strap your shite up and play ball. No one thinks you're cooler if you have a strap hanging from the side of your helmet. Reply Back to Top |
quote: I just had a horrible image in my head 25 seconds to go, need 4 to win, 10 yard line, mett gets hammered and his helmet pops off. Ruh Roh This post was edited on 4/26 at 9:56 am Reply Back to Top |
quote: I'd imagine MOST of those were "strapped up" and came off from some contact. Very few are attributable to leaving it unbuckled, I'd guess. Reply Back to Top |

quote: I don't know. They may kick higher and near the 5. Try to stop the return before the 25 yd line. This may actually backfire, overall. Teams with GREAT returners will see fewer chances. Others may see more. Reply Back to Top |
quote:quote:This is goofy Totally agree. Will this be an official timeout for a player to get the helmet and then go to the sideline? Will the ref have to hold the ball preventing the offensive team from snapping it if a DLineman is forced into the substitution? What if it is an OLineman? I can see some coaches killing time at the end of games in a real ugly fashion for this. Reply Back to Top |
quote: Will mess some game up and will be overturned after this year. It's so ridiculous that a player could get hit hard on the 2nd to last play, lose their helmet, and not be able to play the last play of the game. What if the QB or stud WR has this happen to them? fricking retarded. Reply Back to Top |

quote: This is the one I'm having trouble with. Does this alter the chop block on an engaged player rule? Seems like it would cause more injuries than it would prevent. Unless we're talking about RBs and slot guys specifically. Reply Back to Top |
quote: Well, a helmet has four button snaps. I rarely see all 4 being used. That is reason number one. While I didn't play college ball, I did play tackle football for over 10 years and not once did I lose my helmet. The guys on my high school team that wanted to look good would wear their helmet a little loose, and leave a snap unbuttoned. They would lose their helmet frequently. I think there is little doubt it is the kids' fault their helmet is coming off. I've seen helmets come off guys standing up blocking each other and one's hand makes incdiental contact to the face mask. That strap would literally frick up your face if it came off while being strapped tight. This post was edited on 4/26 at 12:15 pm Reply Back to Top |
| What if the ref doesn't see the illegal hands to the face that pulls the helmet off? They don't see a lot of shite. Also, if players are in a pile at the line, they will try and rip each other's helmets off. ETA: it wouldn't be hard in a pile to unbutton someones straps and/or pull their helmet off This post was edited on 4/26 at 12:38 pm Reply Back to Top Refresh |
