| Didn't answer you complete question. June of 2010. I think it was the first week. Had some nasty weather early in the day. Didn't have a long sleeve with me. We took the gondola ride to the top of the ridge then I hike from there a couple of miles. The gondola doubles as a ski lift in winter. I had to buy the sweatshirt at the gift shop. Hiked around the town of Franconia the next day and got covered with ticks around the creek bottoms. Like 100 of ticks on my cloths. I didn't notice til I got back to the hotel room. Took off my clothes and threw them in the tub with soap and hottest water I could get. Somehow none got under my clothes. I had jeans and boots on. quote: Thats scary about the ticks...Blue Velvet said they are attracted more to dark clothing. I'll keep that in mind! This post was edited on 4/22 at 5:48 pm Reply Back to Top |
| I didn't notice til I was walking down the hall in the hotel. Freaked me out and bugs don't bother me. I started Picking them off and realized that wasn't working. So emptied my pockets and jumped in the shower with hot water started. Undressed and left my clothes in the tub soaking in soapy water. Reply Back to Top |
| Yep. Earlier today I was thinking of adding a detailed posts about lyme's disease to this thread. I've got it and there's a lot of misinformation out there on the subject. Reply Back to Top |
| Giardia (beaver fever) as well. Have had it, don't want it again. Reply Back to Top |
| Luckily I've never had Giardia. Reply Back to Top |

| Posting from phone right now, but if you have Netflix then check out a documentary called Under Our Skin. I'll write about it in depth later. Reply Back to Top |
| I'm interested in reading about this. Thank goodness ticks down here don't seem to carry it so often. I probably should try harder to remove them the proper way. SE Oklahoma has the worst tick population of anywhere I've camped Reply Back to Top |
| Back to gear... I just noticed the Sawyer squeeze filter on REI. It seems affordable and very easy to use. thoughts? REI This post was edited on 4/23 at 12:22 pm Reply Back to Top |
| looks like a good filter and it's nice that it will fit onto a lot of different containers one thing that would concern me is that freezing may ruin the filter. Not sure how hard of a freeze that would have to be, but I know it gets really cold in Colorado at night, even in the summer This post was edited on 4/23 at 1:24 pm Reply Back to Top |
quote:you think you could just keep it in your sleeping bag when necessary? For $60 and the convenience that it brings, I might give it a try. Reply Back to Top |
quote: sure, but throw it in a ziplock bag so it doesnt drip into your bag sure as hell though, I'd forget it the night it gets to 10 degrees If you get one, I'm gonna need a review. I added it to my REI wish list so I dont forget about it. This post was edited on 4/23 at 1:38 pm Reply Back to Top |
| I use a sawyer and cut the tube on my platypus and insert the filter into the middle of the tube LINK Also, you want one of these not one of these Water gets trapper in the seal lines of the zipper pouch and then you can have Giardia in your water Reply Back to Top |

| and there's a way to connect that to your osprey pack? btw, which liter pack do you recommend for the AT? Reply Back to Top |
did you put that entire blue and gray piece in the line, or just the actual filter part? are those different adapter attachments? This post was edited on 4/23 at 2:01 pm Reply Back to Top |
| Yeah it's platypus>platypus hose>blue/gray filter>platypus hose>mouthpiece>drink Very easy and takes one cut with scissors. I would cut the tube closer to the hydration pack so that the filters stays in your pack and the tube can come out of the pack so you can drink while you walk. Reply Back to Top |
quote:Yeah. you can hang a bladder inside your pack or stuff it on the top. quote:Depends on much you're bringing and how heavy it will be. I used an Osprey Exos 46 in gray/orange when I got below 20 pounds. Reply Back to Top Refresh |
