Draft Talk: Offensive Tackles
Posted by blueslover on 4/13 at 2:49 pm
A look at who might be the best that could fall to #89.

Team: Bushrod is UFA in 2013. Strief UFA the year after. Difficult to evaluate cuz we do not know the official outlook on Charles Brown. He was a 2nd Rd pick that many had a 1st Rd grade on (more on potential than readiness). If they think he might be game ready in 2013 then the need aspect is vastly different than if they question his future. If questionable then a player with Left Tackle developmental potential would be no surprise. I'm not seeing RT or guard in play at #89 unless it was overwhelming can't pass on value.

Mitchell Schwartz, Cal 6-6 318
4 year starter, great tools but still unpolished for NFL standards. The highest rated on my list to imagine being around.

Zebrie Sanders, Florida St. 6-6 307
Very similar to Schwartz, a lot of starts at LT & RT, great tools and seems to still be developing. Even at 307 he looks like he could fill out more to his frame. Key component in a spectacular FL St offense.

Brandon Mosley, Auburn 6-6 305
He wouldn't be near the surprise being available as the first two, maybe no surprise. Still could be a viable selection. Looks to have a lot less LT potential which is prolly the key. Not someone I would jump up and down over but if they rated him well enough to pick I would be satisfied with him.

I have two other names in the mix, Andrew Datko Fl St and James Brown Troy. Not detailing them cuz they look much more RT limited. Datko has major injury issues. Either still could be rated high enough for the Saints to consider them tho. Again, the biggest swing on a tackle selection to me is how they are projecting Charles Brown going forward.

Have any take on these guys? Others to hope for?

I thought James Brown / TROY had been brought up multiple times. Has he slipped are do you see him gone by now.

No surprise to me if Brown is available. His LT potential looks much more limited however. Doesn't look like a bad #89, just not a great value. If he is RT only then the odds of him being a Saints BPA is negligible. 4th Rd though snap him up.

I like Bobbie Massie from Ole Miss and there is also a chance that Mike Adams from Ohio State could plummet. Adams is a physical specimen but there is a lot of mention that he takes plays off and lacks motivation. I wouldn't be disappointed at all if the organization builds depth at the tackle or guard positions with the third round pick. I think this is a very good OG class and would be delighted to see them take a guard who would have been taken in the mid second round in most drafts.

I like this guy. He's tough. That said, i dont think they should spend our 1st pick on a tackle. JMO.

I'd say this draft more than any other before that you shouldn't expect any position at all. The further down the line you get the more BPA over need becomes (Saints historically). The only two positions I would rule out at #89 are QB & RB.

BTW, I just saw Schwartz mentioned as a guy that could sneak into the 1st Rd.

updating...

Schwartz- definitely my highest hopeful, maybe almost a gift if he lasted that long

Sanders- would be very happy if he was the pick. Between Bushmaster, Strief, Brown, & this guy I'd feel pretty confident about the future of our tackle position

James Brown- it takes more scouting eye than I have to see how he rates at #89. As good as our scouts have been in plucking OL gems I'd have to be excited if they called his name. Posters confusion over which OT Brown yer talkin is something to look forward to also. James Brown song references always a plus too.

Mosley- kinda meh on at #89, 4th or 5th would be cool tho, not a screamer in the 3rd

Datko more like 4th Rd or later like Mosley

as wings mentioned above, Massie from Ole Miss wouldn't be a bad pick. Not the degree of value as Schwartz or Sanders in my book but a good pick. Versatility might be his ticket in.
