Minnesota recruiting in Louisiana
Posted by Eurocat on 4/8 at 5:29 pm
I don't follow recruiting at all but just lazily looking at some scout and rivals Louisiana recruits I was mazed to see how many Louisiana kids are on the Minnesota radar.

Does anyone have any idea what the reason for this is?

There's no speed up north. There's a lot of kids in LA who never get seen, or they don't' get offers other than ULL and ULM.

It's not so different from LSU having to go to other states for QB's most years.

Big 10 schools come south for "skill Position" guys. They look at a lot of kids from Florida, Texas, Louisiana, Georgia, Mississippi, etc. for WR's, RB's, DB's, LB's and running QB's.

If you look at the Scout site for Minnesota (2012 safeties), you'll see these guys mixed into the kids that have drawn their interest.

Lots of DB's from Louisiana have been getting recruited by Big 10 & Big East schools. I know OSU, Michigan & Illinois have recruited Florida forever. Lots of skill position guys have been being recruited by Pittsburgh for a few years. West Virginia's QB that threw for all those yards against LSU and one of their WR's are Miramar, Florida kids.

Last year nearly every kid from Louisiana that Mississippi State and Ole Miss were recruiting were also being recruited by Pitt, Nebraska and other Big 10/Big East schools.

the same can be said of the schools in Oregon. With Oregon having found some talented speed guys in Texas, Oregon St has follwoed by becoming very involved in Texas and Louisiana of late

That's because Pitt and Nebraska had coaches with connections to Louisiana. We all know northern schools recruit southern skill players. I think the Ops question had more to do with why Minnesota specifically recruits Louisiana.

If you click the link to their 2012 prospects and look at the different skill positions, you'll see they have been recruiting most every southern state(Miss, Alabama, Georgia, SC, Florida, Georgia and Texas too).

It's not something new. It's not just Louisiana. They aren't the only Big 10 & Big East schools that are doing it.

I have been saying it for years. There is enough speed and skill in Louisiana to go around for many D-1s, even after LSU gets theirs.

The former Minnesota coach (Brewster) was an assistant at Texas. So he would probably have developed some recruiting ties in Texas and Louisiana. I am sure that has continued even with the new coach.

1. look at rivals for MN. usually "they" have 10 players worth talking about.

2. look at rivals for LA. usually "they" have 40 players worth talking about.

MN is now competing with NEBRASKA and TAMU for the "leftover"
Louisiana 3 stars.
