Keep in mind that you are comparing basic cable channels (AMC) to premium channels (HBO).

Right.

But they are fundamentally similar.

What all you people who jumped on the AMC comparison seemed to miss is that I'm not expecting them to offer their shows for purchase the following day but they keep the reins far beyond that.

It is not about money as it is controlling all revenue streams.

THAT is where HBO errs.

It's not that they give their subscribers a bonus to seeing content first.

Yeah this.

It's human nature to do so.

This is so true. I missed the entire second half of the Walking Dead - Season 2. Can't find it anywhere legally.

the last show I pirated was Doctor Who season 6.

After waiting for months for it to come out on Netflix, I finally had enough and got it from a friend who downloaded it.

Two days later, it comes out on netflix

one would think that HBO would meet its consumers and potential consumers half way and offer hbo go as an online subscriber based service, without the need to subscribe to the cable channel.

Don't they offer last year's episodes of GoT through the On Demand feature on cable? I don't get HBO but my cable shows I can get it On Demand for $2.00 an episode.

I don't care if you pirate but arguing over not paying for multiple cable stations to watch an HBO series is like saying you want to buy the red crayon when the company only offers eight, 16, 24, 36, 48, 64, 96 & 120 count boxes. Crayola Crayons

You might find a company that will sell you one red crayon but it's a buyer beware situation because you can't be sure their red crayon will be one of Crayola's quality

and how much do you pay per month for cable to get that feature?

I'm not wasting all that money for cable I never watch.

i assume you can get basic cable and HBO for pretty cheap.. and that gives you access to HBO Go. Then you have access to every GOT episode.

you dont have a right to watch GOT. Its produced by HBO to entice subscribers. IF you want to watch GOT, it is very easy, just subscribe to HBO.

eta - and your quote above pretty much sums up why pirating is rampant.. because its free. Any other explanation to rationalize it is bull shite.

And im not condemning it, i have every channel that Dish Network offers, including premiums. I pay a lot because i want access to everything when i want it.

While i dont torrent anything (only because im not patient enough to wait for a download), i do stream the shite out of movies from streaming sites while i travel for work. I dont try to justify it, i do it because i want to see the newest movies, and dont want to go to a movie by myself and spend $20.

so I'd have to pay $50/month just for the privilege of paying $15/month to get HBO and then get HBO Go for "free"

So I'd be essentially paying $65/month to watch one show. Yeah, that sounds totally worth it. You know, they could just sell the episodes on Itunes for like $3-4 each. I'd be more than willing to fork that over.

some pirates don't mind paying for media. they just don't want to be swindled by the entertainment companies.

case in point: I was shopping for Blu Rays today. I saw several new releases on the shelf for $30-40 for packages with lots of special features. I then found the one I was looking for.. the Stargate 15th Anniversary edition blu ray for $6. It's packed with special features, alongside both the theatrical AND extended cuts of the film. (it's not that hard to include both on a bluray. I'm looking at you, Lord of the Rings).

What inherent value does a $40 blu ray provide over a $6 one, provided they have the same viewing options and special features? It's got nothing to do with supply and demand, as there were several dozen $40 disks on the shelf, and it's cheap as frick to press a new disk.

But its not just that simple. You have to subscribe to a 100 other tv channels that you have no desire for to get HBO.

So people say frick it and torrent it.

there are $20/month plans on Dish. Most come with HBO free for 3 months. you could subscribe to cable for 1 month and watch every episode from last season for $20.

unless you want to watch them during the season as they air. but then, why should HBO do that? They are a subscription based service. They produce excellent shows to entice subscription. Offering a series to the masses while its in season is just not good business for them. Why not just wait for the DVD if you dont want to pay for cable but you dont mind spending some money to watch it?
