My problem with college basketball
Posted by LSU GrandDad on 4/8 at 9:54 am
first i say Happy Easter to all. It is a blessed day for us christians.

college basketball is run by street agents. it starts when a middle school kid shows promise and the AAU coaches, of which i call scum, manipulate the child (which he is at that point) and the childs parents (often just a momma) and control the boys life from there on out. you just can't tell me that that "family friend" ain't gettin' a payoff to help the kid find the "appropriate" college.

i have personally witnessed this and it makes me sick. exploitation of youth is disgusting to me. to be fair, there is some good is some cases, esp. if they keep the kid out of trouble and focused to pass his school work. But, i would hope there would be a better way to accomplish that. anyways, i thought i would rant and get it off of my chest. i am so disgusted with the sport that i would care very little if LSU dropped it as a varsity sport and added those schollies to the academic side of the house.

Another big problem with AAU IMO that is probably less serious than what you stated is that some of these kids are playing over 100 games a year instead of practicing fundamentals. That's why some of these guys look like they can't dribble or pass.

yea. the AAU, overall, is not a bad organization in their dealing with other sports; or at least the others i've had dealings with. the bball is just a bad situation. there is a clamor in mlb for for african american players but the poor kids don't have a chance to play baseball. thier AAU summer coaches won't let 'em play.

Agreed. That's why I'm hoping the powers that be clamp down on this 7 on 7 shite before we see a similar fate with high school football.

Another thing about college basketball is old white people don't like it. I can't figure out why. They love college baseball, though.

That's what I took from the OP.

I follow basketball recruiting very closely and the (negative) influence of AAU coaches is rare. Most are good people who volunteer and try to help people. My son plays AAU right now.

There are always bad eggs, however. Doesn't mean the system is broken. Outside of the elite players, the agent/shoe company stuff is non-existent.

Probably the same reason most black people don't like baseball.

So what? My daughter plays on a competive travel soccer team and it's frowned on for them to play basketball, cheer, etc. You miss a game or practice for another sport, you don't play. Nothing wrong with commitment to a sport.

Thats bull shite. Id find another team to play for, they are kids. I have never heatd of a high school or university not allowing someone to play in multiple sports, especially if they are good enough.

If it were your kid, you could make that choice.

It's the best team, with the best coach, so my daughter chose to commit to it. Good for her.

I didn't say it wasn't allowed. I said you have to prioritize one over the other.
