| Snowboarding... Posted by trebmalenad So I'm most likely going snowboarding for the first time in early 2013. I can manage riding a skateboard and I've wakeboarded before with no problems (no tricks just riding). How hard is it to pick up on snowboarding? Whats it most comparable to? Not looking to pull off any sweet moves just want to be able to ride. Thoughts?Reply Back to Top |
| Take lessons and you will be decent in a couple days. Reply Back to Top |
quote: It's very rough on the knees. If you have had any knee issues (sprains, surgeries, etc), it can be tough. But if you're good with that and have pretty good coordination and can shift your weight and center of balance quickly, you'll do fine. Reply Back to Top |
| My dad and little brother both broke their wrists the first time they learned how to snowboard. Just fair warning. Watch yourself when you fall down. Reply Back to Top |
| I didn't take lessons and after 2 runs down the bunny slopes I was good to go. Reply Back to Top |

quote: Doubtful. You can be the guy who just heel-heels all the way down the slope, but that's the equivalent of doing a pizza on skis the whole time and is lame as fvck. How old are you? Are you planning on picking up snowboarding and making this an annual trip? If you're just going for the first time ever with some friends and aren't planning on doing this regularly I would HIGHLY suggest skiing. Literally with zero lessons if you're borderline athletic and coordinated you can get down anything on skis. Snowboarding, on the other hand, is absolutely brutal for the first couple days if not trips. This is coming from someone who now considers themselves an elite snowboarder. I tried skiing for the first time ever on my last trip to Breckinridge and after a couple awkward minutes you can get down any blues you want which is all you'll be trying to do on your first trip. I've explained it to people that skiing is easier to learn, harder to master, and snowboarding is harder to learn but easier to master. Reply Back to Top |
| I think it is very similar to wakeboarding. Take an hour lesson to learn the basics (keeping your weight on either your toes and heels, learn how to get on the lift). After a lesson it will prob take you a couple days to get comfortable, but it will be well worth it. It all depends on how athletic and coordinated you are. If you can wakeboard you shouldn't have too much trouble. Reply Back to Top |
| I just got back from vacation in which I tried snowboarding for the very first time. Everybody's experience is different, but by the end of my 5th day, I was very comfortable going down any Blue runs on the mountain. (Not just side slipping either, but linking heel side and toe side fluidly) I highly suggest lessons... at least two of them. My first day and first lesson was like learning how to walk for the very first time. Very unnatural movements, and you will find yourself on your arse ALOT that first day. But by the end of that day, you should be able to stay upright on the board going down the easy slopes. The second lesson introduces you to better turning techniques and I wish I had taken that the second day instead of waiting for the third. I spent my second day busting my arse all over the mountain and called it early after taking a nasty fall that should have been preventable! The things learned in the second lesson had me going down the mountain very controlled and using what I learned for the last couple days on the mountain, was able to tackle all the greens and most of the blues by the end of the week.
