You should probably read about the reason the Electoral College is there before you advocate dismantling it.
You should stop assuming that there is only one correct answer.

I believe the electoral college should be abolished. Too many voters don't matter the way it is now.

One can therefore formulate social laws similar to natural ones. These social forces are of such a kind as to produce evolutionary progress through the natural conflicts between social groups. The best-adapted and most successful social groups survive these conflicts, raising the evolutionary level of society generally (the 'survival of the fittest')."[5]

In other words, if you're state has a lot of people, it will succeed and reap the benefits of the Oval Office. If you're state doesn't, it can get fricked. Yup, I used it correctly, thanks.

And, I believe, even more would not matter under a popular vote and you would be heading towards a dissolution of union. I'll take the Electoral College in that scenario.

NO! We are a republic of 50 states. Removing the electoral college would put all the power in the most populous states, thereby diminishing the voice of the medium and smaller populated states.

A few things I haven't seen mentioned:
-The original elector system was set up so that the electors could ride horses to Washington DC. A national popular vote would not have been possible in that day.
-A popular vote would make it almost impossible to rig an election. The tactics that worked in the past to swing individual states, like dropping people from the voting rolls, setting up a controversial statewide vote, and under-staffing specific polling places, would barely put a dent in the national vote.
-No one has any idea how the campaigns would actually work. The candidates would not be campaigning in the middle of big cities since most of those areas strongly support Democrats. Also, if the candidates do only visit the most populous states, it would mean that the Democrat would have to campaign in Texas and Georgia.
