| Casual vs. Hardcore Players Posted by Scruffy Is it possible to achieve a successful balance? This problem seems to have become even more apparent with the release of certain games recently. Mass Effect is a good example where they took a RPG and reduced its RPG elements so more casual players could play. (This is not a ME argument thread, keep that shite out of here) The Halo series is another good example. As the series advanced, the MP was altered for the casual branch of video gamers. Is it possible to have a successful balance between the two? Reply Back to Top |
| Yes but the market has been getting away from it imo. I'm a casual gamer and hardly ever play online, ME3 being the first multiplayer I've really played. I have to buy RPG type games just to get my money's worth. I'm certainly not going to get a first person shooter where the campaign is worth $60. The last FPS games that had real good campaigns for people like me were Halo and MW1. Reply Back to Top |
| Add difficulty levels. Heroic dungeons in wow were way harder than normal ones. Gold in ME3 is way harder than Bronze. Reply Back to Top |
| No, it is not possible to bridge the gap. I'm thankful for things like KickStarter where Wasteland 2 is being developed for players like myself and not those interested only in Fallout 3 and New Vegas. Reply Back to Top |
| Hardcore players would own casual players anyday... Reply Back to Top |
quote: It is not possible due to Money. Most, not all of the hardcore players are males 13-24 and still in college. Once they get past these years they still want to play these games and to make sure games make it these days the content has to be made more accessible to them once they are out of college on the dating scene and trying to start a family. The people with the most money are usually the Casual players due to life so the companies have to make their product attractive to them. So by doing this you piss off a good bit of the hardcore players and the casual players are still casual. Yes I know there are exceptions to this but the rule is younger males = Hardcore gamers. Posted by CornDogCologne on 4/7 at 9:39 pm to Vood I am definitely becoming more casual as I get older. I still appreciate depth, but I don't have the time to grind through shite like I used to. I don't mind complexity so long as things aren't overly complicated solely to increase the length of the game. This post was edited on 4/7 at 9:40 pm Reply Back to Top |

This will help separate the differences. ![]() Reply Back to Top |
quote: Yeah, and the hardcore community hates reach, and the general consensus(among hardcore halo players) is that halo 3 is worse than 1 or 2. It is rather hard to appeal a game to both groups, but there are far more casual gamers, and always will be more, so most games are going to cater to them. Reply Back to Top |

| Same here man. I gotta full time job, wife and a son. Takes me almost a year to play through a game. Ive been playing Red Dead Redemption since November and I still got Arkham City after that, so I'm set for a while. Games like Skyrim would take me over 2 years. Reply Back to Top |
| "Hardcore" is some made up term that G4TV beats into the head of the gaming community to make them think they are such. Reply Back to Top |
Posted by CornDogCologne on 4/8 at 2:22 pm to Tactical1 The types of gamers that self apply the term hardcore aren't exactly the group of people I want to be lumped in with. This post was edited on 4/8 at 5:23 pm Reply Back to Top |
| Too late, you already played Dark Souls therefore you are hardcore. Deal with it. Reply Back to Top Refresh |
