University of Iowa law school: Republicans need not apply
Posted by L.A. on 4/6 at 11:23 am
More glimpses of life inside the liberal bubble.

quote:

Iowa Republicans are taking aim at the state's top law school for denying a faculty position to a conservative law professor, who an assistant dean once said embraces politics the rest of the faculty "despises."

Teresa Wagner, who works as an associate director of writing at the University of Iowa College of Law, is suing former dean Carolyn Jones for employment discrimination, claiming she was not hired for a professor position because Jones and other law faculty disapproved of her conservative views and activism.

To hold a law faculty position at the publicly funded university is viewed as a "sacred cow," Wagner said in an interview, and "Republicans need not apply."

The case, which goes to trial this October, has become a chief concern for Republicans in Johnson County, who on Monday passed a resolution calling on the Iowa House of Representatives' oversight committee to investigate hiring practices involved in Wagner's case and others like it.

"We think the hiring policies need to be such where there are certainly non-discriminatory practices which relate to political philosophy, as well as to race and gender and other issues," said Bob Anderson, chairman of the Johnson County Republican Party. He claims students are deprived of "diversity of political thought" when conservative thinkers, like Wagner, are rejected based on their politics.

quote:

Wagner, who graduated with honors from the law school in 1993, has taught at the George Mason University School of Law. She has also worked for the National Right to Life Committee, which opposes abortion, and the conservative Family Research Council.

In 2006, Wagner applied for a full-time instructor position with the law school and was denied. She was also rejected for an adjunct or full-time position in four subsequent attempts, according to her attorney, Stephen T. Fieweger.

Fieweger said Wagner's candidacy was dismissed because of her conservative views, and he cited a 2007 email from Associate Dean Jonathan C. Carlson to Jones in which Carlson wrote: "Frankly, one thing that worries me is that some people may be opposed to Teresa serving in any role, in part at least because they so despise her politics (and especially her activism about it)."

must keep out viewpoints that you don't agree with. God forbid if you presented all sides and let the students choose for themselves...god forbid!

Seriously. Why are they so threatened by an opposing point of view?

Because they are afraid that people will choose the other side. If everyone is like them ,then they can feel better about THEIR choice, so they limit the choices of others. It is the actions of desperate people who don't truly believe they are right.

Makes sense - the law school I went to was liberal as hell even though it was in a very conservative State and the undergrad was conservative. I remember our Con Law professor practically crying over Bush v. Gore when it came down that day.

According to Ms. Wagner’s lawsuit, the law faculty at Iowa in 2007 included a single registered Republican among its 50 or so members. The Republican professor was appointed in 1984. In 2009, The Des Moines Register found that there were two registered Republicans on the faculty.

And, these are the same intellectually bankrupt scumbag mother frickers who go into courthouses all around the country and extoll the virtues of "diversity" with a straight f'ing face.

Good Lord, what a cop out. And yet people keep using it on here. FOX NEWS! FOX NEWS!

Who else do you think has the stones to carry a story that makes liberals look so bad? MSNBC? Please.

So how about you quit being a parrot and address the facts presented in the story? What is your opinion of a law school that denies someone a position on the faculty because they are conservative?

Fieweger said the school argues Wagner was rejected because she "stunningly flunked the interview" in refusing to teach analysis -- a claim he said "just doesn't make sense and the jury is going to see that."

So...there could be more to the story? Maybe she refused to teach the class they were hiring an adjunct to teach? This story only has comments from Wagner, the chairman of the local GOP, and Wagner's lawyer.

The only evidence is that email, which expressed concern about Wagner's politics only in terms of her gelling with the other faculty, which is always an important consideration for departments.

Santorum also claims that the CA university system doesn't offer US history courses.

GOP Catnip (more lies)

Of course not. Who said otherwise?

But that's not the question I aksed you. What do you think about the email from the law school dean that mentions concern about the woman's politics?

What do you think about a law school that has not one conservative on the faculty?

Coincidence?

Good policy?

Actually, the article says they do have one. A token, probably, but they have one.

Yes., my mistake. A holdover from 1984.

But this is a troubling statement:

Yeah, L.A. I believe there is probably some truth to her claim. However, I do know that one of the primary considerations in hiring faculty is how well the candidate compliments/gels with the existing faculty.

There is one thing to note, though, which is that she was applying for an adjunct position rather than a tenure-track position. That is a totally different ball game. Adjuncts are usually temporary instructors, and they typically get none of the usual benefits that come with academia.

The fact is that most departments thrive off of adjuncts these days. They need them. Quite often, adjuncts have more time to devote to the students (no research agenda) and have more professional experience (because they are usually professionals transitioning to retirement).

Therefore, it seems mysterious to me that any college would turn away a qualified adjunct. That is what makes me think there might be something to this woman's claims.
