Northshore - Home Insurance?
Posted by TakingStock on 4/5 at 9:20 pm
Can anyone tell me which insurance companies are currently writing new policies for home insurance on the Northshore? Any good/bad experiences with shopping for new coverage? Help is greatly appreciated on where to look!

I just bought a house in Mandeville and went with ASI. They gave the best rate out of the few my dad's friend looked into for me

Excellent, that's who I am looking at too. Seems like they have some good reviews overall based on what I've seen online.

I've been happy with Shelter for over ten years now including the service provided during Katrina.

ASI may be your best bet if one of the larger companies can't do it. They are a regional company so they're a little smaller and claims service will probably be slower in the event of a major catastrophe.

They have some holes in their policy too so be aware of that.

Frank Carmeli/Allstate/Mandeville. Writes for Occidental and saved me a ton.

What type of holes does ASI have in their policy?

Does anyone know of any major insurance companies writing home insurance policies for houses in Mandeville? They have been hard to find.

Minor stuff for most people but you should be aware: Animal Liability Exlusion (can buy back $25k for dog liability), no coverage for other structures that are not of the same construction of the home (no coverage for awnings, sheds, etc), loss of use/additional living expense for hurricane losses is only 80% of loss incurred.

Those are the first few that come to mind. Like I said, not a big deal to most people, but you should definitely know about them before you sign the policy.

They are also somewhat tough on underwriting (especially for older homes - older than 2000). I've had cancellations and non-renewals for ridiculous things; unsecured appliance (refrigerator outside with no lock), car with no license plate on premises (nice car under a carport, but no license plate on it), and many for "disrepair/lack of maintenance/pride in ownership" - mold on siding/soffits, rot on fascia, cracks in driveway (trip and fall hazard), etc.

I think they are a step down from the bigger, national companies, but still a step up from most of the other regional companies. FWIW, I'd have no problem insuring my home with them.

Not sure if I need to put it in flashing lights, or not, but CLARK GRISTINA/Shelter Insurance. Big company, AAA rated and writing policies on the northshore.

Also had an adjuster on my roof the week after Katrina hit and got paid that day. Good company.

I don't write for Shelter but my Grandmaw had them and the claim service was great after Gustav. I'd recommend them over ASI if the price is right.

Exclusions to section 1; #12

They exclude wind and hail coverage to

a. outdoor radio and television antennas or satellite
dishes and aerials including their lead
wiring, masts or towers;

b. awnings, aluminum framed screened enclosures,
aluminum framed carports or aluminum sheds;

c. solar panels; solar water heating systems including
solar panels, pipes supplying and returning
water to solar panels, and equipment
or devices controlling solar water heating systems; or

d. any structure not attached to the dwelling
unless the structure is constructed of the
same or substantially the same material as
that of the dwelling and attached to a permanent

The solar panels exclusion sucks too. We get a few a month that either add solar panels or new quotes with solar panels.
