| At first I was a little surprised at how high Arsenal is, then I remembered something I noticed on wikipedia when doing a little Arsenal research. Arsenal's first season in the top division of their current run in the top division was in 1919. The next closest is Everton in 1954. Reply Back to Top |
| We talked about this exact graphic several months back. It's important to realize that this ranks the teams based on total points accumulated in the top division. This weights the standings heavily in favor of teams that have been top flight for longer periods of time. While that is very important and impressive, it can be a little misleading. What I think is a better indicator of team performance in the top flight would basically an efficiency ranking - Points per Games Played. This would be the standings based on that: 1 Manchester United 1.39 2 Liverpool 1.34 3 Arsenal 1.32 4 Chelsea 1.21 5 Tottenham Hotspur 1.20 6 Leeds United 1.19 7 Everton 1.17 8 Aston Villa 1.17 9 Queens Park Rangers 1.17 10 Southampton 1.15 11 Newcastle United 1.13 12 Norwich City 1.12 13 Ipswich Town 1.11 14 Nottingham Forest 1.10 15 Manchester City 1.09 16 Blackburn Rovers 1.08 17 West Ham United 1.08 18 Coventry City 1.08 19 Sheffield Wednesday 1.08 20 Sunderland 1.06 21 Charlton Athletic 1.04 22 Wolverhampton Wanderers 1.03 23 Huddersfield Town 1.01 24 Burnley 1.01 25 Portsmouth 1.01 26 Preston North End 1.01 27 Bolton Wanderers 1.01 28 Sheffield United 1.00 29 West Bromwich Albion 1.00 30 Middlesbrough 1.00 31 Leicester City 0.97 32 Blackpool 0.96 33 Stoke City 0.95 34 Birmingham City 0.93 35 Derby County 0.72 Reply Back to Top |

quote: But in all seriousness, I think the "efficiency" standings make more sense. It shows which teams have made the most of their time in the upper echelon on British football. You can't convince me that Everton really truly belong above Man U or Chelsea. Reply Back to Top |
quote: Everton has won the English top division 9 times is one of the oldest clubs in the world and helped found the football league over 25 years before Chelsea even existed. Chelsea have won the top division a mere 4 times in comparison and 3 of those times were after they were bought by one of the richest men in the world. Everton also won the European cup winners cup in the 80s. This was the predecessor to the champions league, which, despite outspending all but a select few clubs in the world Chelsea has still not managed to win. Reply Back to Top |
quote: They have also been to the FA Cup final 13 times (which I believe is second only to Man Utd). Reply Back to Top |
quote: This was not the predecessor to the Champions League. It was the predecessor to the UEFA Cup, or merged into it (or something like that, as the UEFA Cup has the second through fourth or fifth place finishers, maybe it used to have each country's cup winner, then the second, third, maybe fourth). quote: This is correct. Everton has some respectable history. Chelsea is a Villareal wiff lotz mo' monay and little to no player development. This post was edited on 3/21 at 1:48 pm Reply Back to Top |
quote: You do realize they played football before 1990, right? Reply Back to Top |
quote: My mistake you are correct. Champions league was European cup. So everton have never won the champions league, neither has Chelsea. Aston Villa won it in 1982 Reply Back to Top |

quote: Aston Villa vs. Everton is in fact the most played fixture in English top flight football which makes complete sense looking at the all time table. They do have a few more league titles than our 7 but we are one of only 4 English clubs to win the champions league (man u, Liverpool, and forest under Clough). Two great old clubs with a lot of history Reply Back to Top |
