The Trade Deadline Thread: Hornets seek continuity in push for championship

Chris Kaman is still the most likely trade candidate for the Hornets, but John Reid of the New Orleans Times-Picayune says any of New Orleans' veteran players are available for the right combination of draft picks and expiring contracts. Here are a few more of Reid's Hornets rumors:
•New Orleans is listening to offers on Trevor Ariza, though Ariza's agent David Lee said Wednesday he hasn't heard about any trade scenarios involving his client.
•The Hornets backed out of trade talks with the Cavaliers involving Emeka Okafor and Antawn Jamison, since Cleveland insisted on acquiring one of New Orleans' two 2012 first-round picks. The Hornets continue to try to trade Okafor though. •There remains speculation that Mike Dunleavy, who is part of the group trying to buy the Hornets, may want to keep Chris Kaman around past this season. I can't see that having a major impact on the team's Kaman decision though, since the Hornets are still owned by the league for now.

The Pacers are expected to make another run at Chris Kaman before Thursday's trade deadline.
The Pacers desperately need a backup for Roy Hibbert with Jeff Foster (back) out. Indiana has more than $14 million in cap space and two open roster spots, so a deal between Indiana and New Orleans would certainly make sense. However, Larry Bird will not give up a first-round pick for an expiring contract, so the Pacers won't be overpaying for Kaman's services.

•The Rockets are discussing more than half their roster in trades, having offered around Terrence Williams, Jonny Flynn, Jordan Hill, Chase Budinger, Patrick Patterson, Luis Scola, Hasheem Thabeet and Courtney Lee. According to Kyler, Houston would trade any combination of those players to acquire Chris Kaman.

I would also like Patterson and either T Will or Lee. Sounds like the best return for Kaman since we would get 2 young players with potential.

Patterson and Lee would be my preferences.

Patterson has potential while Lee would be a good bench scorer behind Gordon.

Celtics interested in Kaman...

The Boston Celtics are very much in the market for a center and will certainly look to make a move prior to the trading deadline.

But if the C’s fail to land a much-needed big man prior to tomorrow’s 3 p.m. deadline, all is not lost in their quest to add size.

New Orleans center Chris Kaman has been on the trading block for a while, with the asking price seemingly dropping by the minute.

He’s earning more than $14 million this season, which as you can imagine, has scared off a number of potential suitors.

If the Hornets can’t move him via trade, you can anticipate talks about a buy-out to begin soon.

That would allow him to become a free agent and sign with any team of his choosing.

According to a league source, Boston would be on his short list of potential destinations.

“You look at what they need and what he brings to the game . . . it would be a great fit, it really would,” the source said. “But a lot of things have to happen, and not happen, before that can come about.”

If true this is the best we could hope for, but I find it really hard to believe this is Houston's way of thinking considering how little other teams have been willing to offer

I think it's a real possibility that nothing happens. That's okay with me. It's not that any realistic trade at this point is going to make a difference in the near or long term.

They want out from Scola's long-term deal for one.

On many of the others, they've already rescinded their options / qualifying offers on them to create cap space for next year and are hoping to get something for them.

This is where the credibility went south. They seem to be trying to portray it like the Hornets are trying to rid themselves of Kaman, when they're really just trying to get some value. How would buying him out do anything positive for the Hornets?

Very unlikely to happen, IMHO.

Man I wish we could have traded away an all-star PG for a disgruntled chump, a bad contract, and a streaky scorer. David Stern is trying to kill the Hornets.

Indiana has acquired Leandro Barbosa from the Raptors.

Depending on who they gave up, this may eat a lot of the cap space they'd potentially be using on Kaman.

I have the same gut feeling.

It seems that a lot of teams are being very, VERY frugal this year. No one wants to upset the balance or take major chances it seems.

Kaman for Celtics 2013 first round pick. I see a big drop off next year for them. Probably won't be a lottery pick but there is a chance.

The Houston scenario would be nice but it doesn't work with the salaries. We'll offload him for a pick or just keep him for the season.

We may have to take on some pieces like Thabeet or Flynn to match salaries for the guys we want, like Patterson, Lee, Budinger, etc.

The terms on the Indiana trade is that they send a 2nd to Toronto for Barbosa, which means they no longer have the cap room to take Kaman unless they send someone back.

Yeah Indy is out.

Looks like Houston is our best bet.
