Compost question for gardeners... Posted by Zach This is my first attempt at a pile and it's going great. But today I pulled the tarp off the pile to turn with a pitch fork and add some material. The pile was infested with doodle bugs. I know worms are great but are doodle bugs OK? ![]() Reply Back to Top
They are very fine converters of detritous mass into mulchage. Reply Back to Top
Thanks. I wonder if they have food fights with the worms? Reply Back to Top
I think it is more like inter-species sex. Reply Back to Top
Google sez: "Sowbugs and pillbugs are scavengers and feed mainly on decaying organic matter. They occasionally feed on young plants but the damage inflicted is seldom significant. Sowbugs and pillbugs thrive only in areas of high moisture, and tend to remain hidden under objects during the day. Around buildings they are common under mulch, compost, boards, stones, flower pots, and other items resting on damp ground. Another frequent hiding place is behind the grass edge adjoining sidewalks and foundations." Reply Back to Top
