Re-sign the O-Line
Posted by Waldeaux24 on 1/22 at 12:16 am
While I completely agree that we need to look for replacements in the coming years, I'm not sold on drafting O-line in the first 2 rounds. They proved in the last few games that they could play ball together. DLP is clearly the weakest link, but he's serviceable and we could do a lot worse than him. Strief shouldn't be too expensive either. I say we re-sign the pair at a reasonable cost. Then go WR/CB/BPA in the first few rounds, then look for developmental players along the line. Thoughts?

I would never draft a center in the first or second round. You can usually get the best in the draft in the third or fourth. I think most on here that did the mock website waited until the 3rd or later to draft a replacement for DLP.

You're better off with draft picks than those two.

Disagree about DLP we need a replacement. Strief would be OK on a friendly deal. We simply have to protect our 35 year old qb if we want to legitimately have a shot at winning the thing. The time for getting by with journeymen projects, late round picks, etc is over. Time to take some of the burden off Drew.

We might have a replacement for DLP in Lelito. Hell, we have two draft picks on the practice squad in Andrew Tiller and Marcel Jones. I understand they weren't drafted for C role but as well we know CSP he likes versatility within his players. Between the three, maybe drafting a C may not such a dire need. Just thinking outside the box a lil fellas.

Correction: Andrew Tiller no longer with us. Currently with Green Bay.

Upgrade the center position.
Try to re-sign Streif.
Burn Drews gloves.

Seems likely we'll resign DLP because of FA being before the draft. There is no assurance we can get a C, and if we let him walk and don't get one we're fricked

If we let DLP walk as you say I can assure you with 100% accuracy that we will get a center and the Saints will not be f@cked.

It would be nice to have some continuity, but it might not be practical.

Agreed. DLP was a practice squad player who had to step in when Krutez lost his mojo. He is replaceable.

DLP could be replaced very easily. Even if we miss on early FA or the draft, we can still pick one up after the first round of cuts.

That's the trick. It's not as easy as it might sound. What is reasonable? How do you correlate contract to performance? What is their value on the open market? Where are you at with the cap and how will the signings affect that? How do their ages and expected longevity play into the O Line long term plan? Who do you have on the roster as possible fills before free agency & draft?

-I think Strief is more likely back. Played pretty well this year for the amount of grief he gets

-dlP I might go more likely back than not. Hoping no myself. I'm not much on re-signing players described as "we could do a lot worse than him". Could likely get the #1 center in the 2nd Rd. Certainly could still get a day one starter in the 3rd Rd. Upgrade ability, go cheaper, younger, and have the future in sight. I saw Stork was playing guard at the Sr Bowl. The ideal plan for me would be a top center that could slide over to guard in another year or two as Grubbs & Evans get older (along with their $20mil cap cost).

Loomis pointedly mentioned Lelito at the Sr Bowl. Could be the next guy up. When it comes to evaluating players outside of games we really don't have a clue how they see guys.

denver are on their 3rd(?) center for the year and they haven't missed a beat all season.

we could do the same with a smart rookie.

There are 4 really good centers in this class:

Travis Swanson, Ark
Bryan Stork, FSU
Weston Richburg, Colo St.
Tyler Larsen, Utah St.

Saints have met with Larsen and Stork who have been having a good week at Senior Bowl practices. I think the team understands that it's time to start adding some youth and talent to certain areas because cycling in undrafted players and signing expensive FAs has deteriorated the stability of the O-line.

Luckily, the C and RT positions can be addressed later in the draft and still yield week 1 starters, leaving the Saints to go BPA in the early rounds.
