Interesting stat. RT @JPSTATS Saints defense leads NFL making 93.5% of their tackle opportunities. Washington lowest at 82%.

Leaky yardage is down to a minimum.

but but everyone was saying its a personal issues not a scheme last year. no matter who's coaching the defense, they can't do anything with this personal

That too, but tackling is the biggest improvement from what I've seen. Pass rush is a close second imo.

Please explain how a scheme makes players tackle better

To be fair, we have had a significant personnel turnover. But yes, some people that under performed last year are playing well (Jenkins and Hawthorne come to mind).

I think the biggest thing is Ryan built a defense around his players, and didn't stubbornly try to jam players into his.

This is something that is huge IMO. I used to get so frustrated watching the Saints miss easy tackles. This year, I rarely ever see it

I think a lot of it has to do with alignment. It's been said that Spags had a lot of the back 7 with multiple options on each play, which in theory can work if everyone is seeing and thinking the same thing, but was horrible in practice. There was mass confusion; players covering the same guy or at times running into each other.

Ryan's defense, while complex, gives players DEFINITIVE assignments, allowing them to play and not think.

I just want to say that the defense more than carried their weight the last game, despite the last drive.

I would have laughed in your e-face if you had predicted this before the season.

The only thing that still frustrates me is seeing blitzers come in and not get their hands up. Hell, I don't see anyone do this anymore.

The scheme has removed Harper and MJ from the back end.

Or fate whatever.

For one thing, when you are in a better position to make a play, it's easier to make a tackle.

Obviously this is great but it makes you wonder wtf have they been doing in years past? These are nfl players. Certainly Ryan didnt come in and teach them how to tackle....

GW was known for saying that he didn't care if the players made a mistake as long as they played fast, or something like that. He also didn't care if the ball carrier got 10 extra yards as long as they were trying to strip the ball. And he didn't care if they got to the QB, as long as they were blitzing.

I know I'll get crushed for this but...

Hi much does Payton, an offensive guy, actually have to do with tackling and front 4 getting pressure?

Hell, I think its fair to also ask how much does rob Ryan have to do with those 2 as well lol. Of course he's doing something right, but it's probably a mix of that and new personnel.

I just think we have some good, young players playing really well. I'm sure coaching plays some factor but imo much less than most would think.

Every team or coordinator have their particular points of emphasis. Under Payton ball security is paramount. Your snaps played will be directly affected by fumbling- no matter how you perform elsewise. As pointed ou,t GW focused on stripping over wrapping up. With such a dramatic change in many of the same players, RR obviously made it a focus. If players are told you are gonna get benched if not wrapping up better then they consciously work on that aspect.
